Charles, any idea how your home made it through the storm? Say a neighbor who refused to leave etc?

For perspective TRN- did Houston give an evacuation order/advisory?  Other than your God given common sense, what prompted you to head for the hills?  I've recently heard that Houston has a history of "flooding" according to the new pundits.

I read (somewhere....cant find it now) that the Gov. said evacuate but a top county official in Houston said stay in place so as not to get caught on flooded roads (or maybe it was vice versa) I'm sure that confusion didnt help people.

Houston is pretty much a swamp to begin with isnt it? So I can't imagine it's good when it comes to getting rid of the water that falls. I don't know how much will come into Houston from surrounding areas too- i know west of their is higher elevation but maybe that will go elsewhere I dunno.

My house is fine. Most of my neighborhood had flooded streets but very few if any have water in their homes. Mine should be fine. It's the highest in the area.

Houston is a low lying area and we have created massive retention reservoirs and widened and deepened all the bayous in the city. The highways are designed to channel water around town.

Ed Emmett the county judge advised shelter in place.  Gov Abbott said listen to local officials.  Last time we tried to evacuate 4M people there were dozens of dead from the evacuation. The worst place to be in high water is in a car.

I've lived there all my life and we'd probably been fine. I left because I have a place to go with food water shelter generator fuel and solitude. No need to stay when you can reduce your risk by leaving well in advance. Rule of thumb is you can't plan to get away from tornados but if you get caught in an hurricane, you are a moron. They give plenty of warning.

How to know when you are the only redneck in your family. I'm out cleaning shop drinking a beer and the wife brings this out.

Got to jack a corner of my deck today. This part is the 21 year old orifinal deck and a footing had settled. Talked to a contractor who wanted to dig it all out, pour a huge new footing, etc etc. I decided to jack it and put a 3" block in instead. Cost: a few hours of work. Yes I may have to redo it at some point, but after 20+ years I can live with that. If I need more at some point so be it. But it's good for now.

Looks like a true TRN garage.

Commercial roll up door, stacks of wood, stickers on the cabinet and oh wait, a RED TRUCK OUTSIDE!!

Is that a water line or air line there in blue?

Been working on the wife's island, but with the heat, I can only handle a short time in my garage after work.

The removable top will have tile.

Tex's last response was really informative for me when he explained that the roads were actually a conduit for the water. All the before & after pics showing the highways flooded.

Then they started talking of releasing water from a couple dams and flooding more homes. So I'm wondering the same as the rest of you all.

All good. I'm way north of the chaos.  Main freeway into houston is flooded so I'll have to tough it out a little while longer.

Yeah. Reinforcements may be necessary.

I am grateful to the Lord Jesus Christ on many fronts. Our house in houston was spared the flood. We had another place to evacuate to. It also was a great time to sit with the kids (and wife) and reinforce the logic and reasoning behind being prepared and having a plan.

I would hope I would have the grace needed to praise Him should we have been trapped and our house flooded too. We could have survived a month locked in the house in houston too based on my supplies there.

The kids have teased me about my "phases". As I checked off the list of being prepared in priority order. The weapons and weapons training phase. The diesel truck phase , the freeze dried/food storage phase, the HAM radio phase, the BOL phase, the full med kit phase,  etc.

It was great to see the light bulbs in their head light up when they put all the pieces together and linked that to why we are having a mini vacation and not standing in line for rations.

TRN, not sure how old your oldest is currently. However, mine being a sophomore in HS all of the learning she received growing up is coming full circle. She comes home daily to tell me all the liberal BS she is being fed at school. We are technically a rural school still with the city liberals crowding in. The conservative kids refuse to back down as the libs try to feed them lines of crap. It's wonderful to know that they listened to the old mans preaching all these years and want nothing to do with the dark side.....

Glad to hear your family is safe Tex.

My wife and I had the first of our weekly checkups today. They estimated Heidi to be 6lbs 7oz and on track for a delivery in the next two weeks (Dr's best guess anyway). I'm currently getting ready to put the last coat of paint on the baseboard and shoe mold in her room. It'll be ready for a crib by tomorrow. Cutting it close!

Longball. They get here when they get here generally. Babies make their own rules. Other than conception the only contribution I made was to ask the doc to pop her water early once the baby got 8 lbs and the wife was miserable.  She made us swear not to tell but I took the wife in and she popped her water with forceps and then we showed up at the hospital. "Water broke"!

Ken go ahead and pick up Shawn on the way. I like hippies.

I think I have a spot large enough for a LZ Don. Let me know when you get close and I'll pop smoke. I think I only have purple left.

Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

I think the wife would kill me before I ever made it to the truck with kids, school, work and her needing a new car.   I want a road trip so bad

Ok, I'm in........

Don 10 years later is never gunna have that get together at the hide.

So we might as well go to Charles place and save him from some H2O & BBQ. Plus a trip with Ken gives me a lot of time to harass him with H jokes, so win win!
Living in the remote north hoping Ken doesn’t bring H up here any time soon…..

TRN glad to hear a potential tragedy was turned into a "vacation" because of your planning. And good that they're old enough to see how the work you did led to that. They will be able to tell stories in the future about how this tragedy was not one for your family because you planned, prepared and executed.

I would love to see an AAR at some point about what worked, what didn't, what you didn't need, wish you had more of etc. Planning is always Step 1 but we don't often get chances to see how it plays out in a real world situation so love to see what you would change based on your experience in this.

Longball good luck....little girls are great, but in about 12 years you'll have your hands full. But plant the right seeds like was mentioned to head off the liberal BS and she will make you proud. My oldest is a conservative firecracker who puts up with no crap on that front (or others truth be told!). ANF she's in crazy NYC.

Um.....is this some sort of weird liberal story? Hahaha.
