Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Stupid Diesel
« on: August 14, 2015, 01:00:15 PM »
I felt like whining this morning so here it is.
I've been prepping the rv for its maiden voyage for about 3 months now,  and been scouting camp spots for a few weeks,  and yesterday was the day to hook up. As we topped one of the larger mountains on the route the truck temp hit 245 and started blowing Trans fluid out. Ugg
I pulled over and coolant was shooting out of the radiator, caused by the disintegrated fan shroud.

Thank goodness for the container of pepper in the rv.

D.O.T. / Giddy.....not!
« on: August 04, 2015, 10:51:22 AM »
I've been turnin' wrenches for a while now, and over time, my love of cars has faded. There was a time when a 56 chevy would really turn my crank, or maybe an old studebaker truck cruising down the road would get my blood pumpin', but I confess, now I only think to myself "that poor sucker, I bet he spent 2 grand this year just keeping that thing on the road", or something to that affect. I have come to despise working on older stuff, soley because it's not very profitable, and most of the owners are tight wads.

...so, I thought my heart was dead for cars, until, this little gem rolled into my humble abode last week:

..then I opened the hood (trunk?) "what is that doing in there?" I asked the owner, while pointing at a small block vette engine. He responded "oh, I didn't tell you, it's a kit car".

Yeah.

Oh well, maybe next time.

Got some of these after readin' some good reviews on them. I will use them specifically for holding down the ranger in my trailer. They appear to be pretty heavy duty:

It'll be nice not having the extra webbing in the way. To use, you just press the little red button and pull on the strap until reaching the required length, then ratchet it tight like any other strap.

Everything Trailer, Camper, or RV related / 05 Raptor toy hauler
« on: May 18, 2015, 11:40:30 PM »
Just thought I would show off my latest acquisition. I had plans for a toy hauler in the future, but ran across this one at a price I couldn't turn down. The 12' garage is 3" too short for my ranger crew, and the queen loft at the front of the garage needs to be raised 3" to clear the roof, but should be worth the mods.
It's 38' with 2 slides, w/15,800 gvw and 11,500 empty:

General Vehicle Related Discussion / Truck Mounted RZR Rack
« on: May 17, 2015, 12:55:35 AM »
My brother decided to one up me by purchasing this RZR 1000 last week. The problem is that he doesn't have a way to haul it....except for borrowing Kens trailer, but then he can't tow his tt camping trailer.
We decided to build a lightweight rack for his F250. With a bit of math,  and help from a metric tape measure, we figured the overall height with rzr should end up around 12.5 feet.....or 12.5 meters. ..not real sure.

Here's the truck, with 8 inches of lift, and the new toy :

Build Threads / 2012 GMC 2500 Rear Bumper Build
« on: February 15, 2015, 10:00:32 PM »
My goal, since purchasing this truck, was to build my own bumpers and side steps.
Fast forward 3 years and I finally got started. I was transferring some of Flyin6's build thread to this site, and towards the end, I happened upon his rear bumper mods and install......got me fired up!
I decided to build the rear bumper first, to gain skill, so that the front one would be easier and hopefully come out as nice or nicer.

Here the factory bumper is removed:

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Metal Slicer and Super Press
« on: December 25, 2014, 06:11:34 PM »
My Christmas gifts to myself. Well, actually end of the year purchases.
Decided to build a real bumper for the LML, and my Hypertherm 30 (their smallest cutter) wasn't up for the task. Settled on the '45 series, which sliced up this 5/8 and 1/2" stuff fairly easy.

..those are the bumper mounts, and they hold this 8" channel on:

I also purchased a 50 ton shop press after twisting up a HF 20 tonner trying to press out a ford wheel bearing. I've searched high and low for a decent press, that wasn't $4,000, and that would serve my little shop for the rest of my career. This one is China, like most of the cheaper ones, but is built really well, weighing in at 800 lbs. It came from Greg Smith Equipment and ran just shy of $1600 . I should be able to use the big guy to straighten out the little 20 ton model, and take that one home for neighborhood use.

....the top drawer of that black tool box is right at 6' to give perspective.

Firearms / Long Range Shooting
« on: December 13, 2014, 11:57:56 PM »
I've recently been shooting up to a 1000 yards and thought I would share. I would also like to thank Texasredneck for some guidance back when I first set up my new turreted scope.
I know there's guys shooting WAY past that mark, but 1000 is still a decent goal.
This spot I have behind my house, is good for 1500+. At 1000, I was having trouble seeing my hits....so every 5 shots I had to drive to the target to inspect. Today I made a hanger for an ar500 target I recently acquired, so now I can just listen for the "gong" sound.
Here's the "range". The pic is taken from the gun bench and end of the trail in the background is 1000.

This is looking through the new Trijicon Accupoint:

...and through the spotting scope:

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Is that BO I smell?
« on: November 21, 2014, 09:31:40 AM »
Welcome to the US, a place of wealth and money for the taking. What, you're from another country you say? WHO cares, come on in and take what's yours, nobody will question you or where you're from. Did I mention the care packages we have to offer? Well, sit right down and we will get started....let's see, 12 kids and 2 in the oven......Ohhh, you be living like a king.....let's get that little mrs down to the hospital right away, I'm sure she will be pushed to the front of the line. Next, i'll give you a couple of these...what are they?...oh, those are just like credit cards, so take your little mrs down to the store and spend, spend, spend!! There's more to come, you won't ever run out, unless a Republican get's voted in!! (like that will ever happen again)
What, you're worried about papers? This isn't Russia, you don't need no stinking papers!!

sorry guys, a bit ticked off this morning. As anyone living near Mexico can attest, this crap is getting out of hand. Our own (actually the county north of me) sheriff Arpaio filed suit against OB this a.m., and at the same time he's in trouble for racially profiling.....this is crazy!!

Firearms / Remington 870 tactical, and a Ruger takedown .22 tune-up
« on: November 18, 2014, 09:33:18 PM »
This was found buried in Don's CMAX build thread. These are Don's posts:

......OK, let's deviate a little here with a couple quick couple of gun builds. Duane came over with his new Remington tactical 870 which he made even more tactical, and I added a couple cool parts to my take down Ruger 22.
Here's the guns before we tore into them:

                                                                                                             (2288)
Holton from Alligator called me last night when he got my email about the missing block off plate.
He's a good guy who cares about his customers and stuff exactly like this shows it.
He is sending me a coated block off plate 2nd day, so I'll have it by Friday

Here's some photos of what the EGR delete looks like
Missing are 4 hose clamps and the block off plate.
Of course the down pipe is a part of my installation since it will have to come out anyway, then why not replace it with the good stuff.

First of all, my caveat
I have not installed this before and am no expert, in fact I am yet to reach novice status.
However
Over several conversations with Holton at Alligator who worked on development of this kit, with what I have and will shortly receive (the actual block off plate) can completely eliminate the EGR system. Those rubber hoses must (Speculation) be a part of the re-route of engine coolant that used to go to the EGR coolers, which have or will shortly find their way to the scrap metal recycler. You actually remove all that stuff in lieu of just blocking off and retaining the now unused components.

Posted by Guyton:
on the LMLs there's 2 coolant lines, one for the 1st cooler and one for the 2nd cooler. the blue line is for the 2nd cooler when it gets removed. the larger black line is for the first one that resembles the LMM EGR cooler if you was to delete it, almost the same as the LMMs but still way different.

as for your plate Don, you'll have it tomorrow buddy.

Yes, Ken you completely remove both coolers
And
Yes that is the supplied up pipe, passenger side
I mentioned a down pipe, because I will be removing the stocker and replacing it with the Alligator pipe at the same time, since I would have to remove it anyway.
The down pipe is not included in the kit, but something I've had for a month or so awaiting install.

General Vehicle Related Discussion / Military Vehicles

If you have one of the toughest, factory built vehicles ever built, a military vehicle, this would be a great place to show it off.
POPP (plenty of pics please)....oh boy, now Don has me speaking in letters.
Here's an '83 AM General 925 5 ton I picked up last year.

I purchased this 'tool' to help me in my quest for meat, the deer and elk I hunt, and to create a bit of fun for the family of 4 girls and a wife. I realized in a short matter of time that it was severely underpowered for such a large sxs. After 2 years of dealing with this pig, I did some research and found out that Polaris had installed a restrictor in the air intake path, which I promptly removed.
That was the first upgrade, supposedly +10hp, but it wasn't enough for Ken (me).......
