No. It was a loss. It got down and we nursed it for several days and it wouldn't recover.

Too cold to haul rock. They are out of dry only have washed and that likes to freeze in the trailer. So, spend the day in the shop working on the toter.
Had to install a new carrier bearing bracket to correct drive line angle issues. The new bracket came bent and slotted holes. I had cut to the proper length and drill the 3 mounting holes.
After that was done I realized that the angles we achieved will be wrong once the suspension is aired up. Dummy. Well I guess I shouldn't say they will be wrong but they will change from what they are with the air bags deflated. Should be in spec. The front 2 drives shafts we're at the same angle. That is no good as it doesn't let the u joint work. It sits there straight and I guess they don't like that.
When that was done I put 2 layers of kilmat noise dampener in the door. It sounds really solid now. Like a regular car door closing. I just need to find a new interior door panel the door handle won't work because the tabs that hold it in are broke. $200 for used $400 for new. Still deciding which way to go.
Tomorrow we go in a Boy Scout winter campout. We had to skip the last meeting due to covid in our house so all the planning was made through group text chats. Should be interesting.

Dang TRN, I felt a little under and tested positive last week. I did everything as normal but stayed away from scouts as some there are really anal about it. Follow the science, masks do no good. I wear if I must, but don't unless I'm asked (maybe)

Wifes battery went dead again, so I went and got another, still under costco warranty (less then 3 years). (wish putting a new battery in the wife would help)

Ken- observation here. You are under 12,000 views from being the biggest waste of time by so many normally industrious men in the site's history!
Actually you already are, but no one notices. But when you notice the number of views moves the decimal point, you'll likely get noticed (fined) by the US Department of Labor!

Slept in until 0730. Was told by my boss yesterday that she didn't want to see me in the office today. I said ok, so I actually have a whole weekend off. But that means I have to finish painting a wall in the mudroom, check the attic for upgrades and storage space if possible. Finish laundry, vacuum the house, and small random gonna go this type stuff since I have the house to myself.

911…
Coolant leak from head area as well as rear engine cover.
Not sure why or how.
I’m at home so no big deal really.
But engine swap this week for me.

Yay. Lucky me.

Had to cut the campout short. 7 degrees with -5 windchill. 2 of the boys didn't pack properly and got dangerously cold before I realized it. t-shirt light jacket and kakis. The other one at least had insulated bibs but nothing but a t-shirt under them. We had meeting on how to dress and everyone made a packing list that I approved but they didn't stick to it. At least they brought the proper bedding. Everyone said they were toasty warm overnight.

I had same thing
It was the heater hose connection near the firewall closest to right rear head/ valve cover.
Now I am not completely sure that was the cause, but I did find droplets of fluid at those fittings which were very loose.
Just looking at it, I see a drop or two from between the rear of the engine and the trans adapter plate collecting right at the bottom at the weep hole. So I can't really tell where it might be coming from.

Yes. Swapping original back in while I go at this one again.

I wish it was heater hose
I pressurized the system.
Can’t pee as hard as it ran out the weep hole.

No fun but I got spare parts still.

I have heard of that crossover being an issue now and then. I had a dribble a while back, but it was the hose with the clip fitting on it. Stopped but I keep an eye on it now for sure.

Do you really have to pull the motor?

I just did some research. Seems that two bolt metal cover on the top of the bell housing mount on the right side of the block is a known failure/leak point. Seems the gasket will corrode and leak over time. M&A makes a billet cover for the hole that uses an O-ring in lieu of the factory gasket. I just ordered one from Merchant. cost with tax and shipping was $75.

Maybe two years ago I noticed a wet spot on the driveway. Looking up, I saw Dexicool on the flange of the right exhaust manifold. That led me to think the head gasket had let go, but Ken said he did not think so, so I just watched it, and it went away. It seems to only happen when the weather cools off, same this year. It makes sense that it is in fact that block off plate. Replacing it is no great big deal, so I'll pop that billet cover on there to guarantee it doesn't happen again

Yeah that may be for you chief.

There’s the coolant crossovers that are sealed with orings.
There are some frost plugs.
I’m really not sure what to make of it but it was a fountain out the weep hole.
So IMO without seeing an oring failure. Not sure how.
But I’m losing faith in this Mahle gasket set I bought.

Ken, after doing it a couple times I think I’m up for three long nights.
I’m taking advantage of a heated shop this time.
No more amenities than heat and a flat concrete floor.
That in itself will make it “better”.

Only two out one in and every bolt has been out.
Not sure what He has give me this test but I’ll take it.
I just don't want to wind up missing a digit or limb.  I can sometimes get in a hurry to get results.

So, Sam, you're leaking from a different place then? All coming from the weep hole and not running around the bell housing adapter plate making it look like it is coming from the back of the block somewhere?
I hope not for your sake!

On a brighter note, Steve, aka, MrWoody joined me and my family for church and dinner today. Second time in six months. Was good to see and talk with him, and I think he enjoyed the service too!

No dually Red, but we talked about it. He doesn't drive it much. When he comes here he comes to work (Nearby GE aircraft engine plant) and drives this 3/4 ton truck with a huge rear box. Driving away from our lunch at a local pizza place, we were looking at the tall box on the back of the truck. I could see the questioning look on my son's face..."He has an indoor rock climbing guy in there," I said with a smile. The unknowing pre-ranger just nodded

So easy...

Which weep hole?

Now that I'm looking at reassembly pictures, there is no way for the antifreeze to get into the Flywheel side.
I need to re-evaluate this.
It may be the access port like Don has mentioned earlier.

Now for the drivers side, based on the pictures i have there is a freeze plug between 2 and 4 cylinders.

That was pre gasket too...

But that is the one I am now suspecting.

There is a gasket now, and it did get tightened.
And I've put 5000 miles on it too.

That is the one I was talking about

Sam, is it possible that bolt stayed loose like that? If so, tighten it and you're all fixed up!

No. That was not the final assembly picture.
That was as the rear cover went on

It wouldn’t hold water with that loose.
Especially without a gasket lol.

I added the final pic above.
I’m still hoping it is that cover.

Will update later tonight.
Have this danged work thing keeping me from it currently.

I wasn't necessarily blaming you for leaving it loose, was just asking if that was the plate. I haven't had a dmax out so I don't know what's back there...
..but you did answer.

Edit: so that means coolant also runs through the bell housing adapter.
Interesting.

It sure does. The rectangular looking port is the coolant path.
There is an o-ring to the block approximately at the pair of bolts on each side.

Yes, apparently that plate is one of the key leak spots.
As is the oil cooler front and rear connections.

I’m going to remove the drivers exhaust manifold and pressurize again to see where that one is coming from.
The rear hopefully I find some stupid error on my part.

The little notch down at the bottom is where it was leaking..is that the weep hole you mentioned?
Not sure how coolant could come out there without having a hole in that adapter housing... in that big flat area.

Just throwing out some thoughts.

I am following this like a hawk. I find myself in nearly the same spot as Sam. I lost a bunch of fluid from a static leak/drip, but looking up from below, it looks like fluid is coming from that oblong slot in the center bottom of the bell housing.
However
When I really investigate, it appears to be migrating down the right rear of the block from somewhere up and near the rear of the right exhaust manifold. So I am pretty confident I found my leak, and I hope that is your leak too.

My billet block-off from Merchant shipped today, so I'll have it and bolt it on this week.

I’m fixed.
None of the above.
Chief, I’d wager that plate is your leak.

Y’all gonna love this one tho.
Hold my beer.

Last Monday I changed thermostats.
Guess what seals the housing to the pipe.
Another danged o-ring.
Didn’t seat somehow.

When I thought the worst I was pressure testing I was in the loading bay of one of our generating stations. It’s about 85-90 dB in there.
Can’t hear squat. And with poor lighting or so much leakage I went down a rabbit hole in my mind.
So after out talking and cypherin today I wasn’t set on it.

In another building ambient noise around 45 db I could hear the leak.
Maybe it had to do with lower coolant level too.
Anyhoo the oring at the thermostat housing was kaput.

Installed new more bigger thickness one and done.

Now for the leak.
Spraying back into valley running to back of engine down passenger side.
Wrapping around to bottom and hooking the notch creating a bad visual.
Other side, spraying just off enough stuff to get around front of drivers head and along to where it was dripping down.

Talk about chicken little there. Lol.
If it was a test, I suppose He was happy I was prepeared to do a motor swap and let me off easy.
In any case, a good pressure tester saved the day.

Now for the rest of the story.

The gasket set I bought was missing many o-rings needed for complete disassembly and reassembly.
Maybe I took too much apart maybe not.
This too was one of those o-rings.

I have a kit from Princess Auto our version of Harbour Freight.
We have different kits at work made by Westward, or branded so in any case.
There are two we have one a tad thicker, and one at least double the thickness.
The mid size seems to be the right size for every leak I’ve encountered.

I’ll find part numbers or a kit number and post it in the LBZ thread.

Man what a whirlwind of chaos the last 48 hours have been.

I just don't want to wind up missing a digit or limb.  I can sometimes get in a hurry to get results.

That sounds like Ike one heck of a goose chase! Glad you found it and can get it fixed without pulling the whole motor!! Chalk it up to a win if it was in my garage!

Good catch before pulling the thing!

Have you seen the HSP kit that runs the upper rad hose front and to the rad vs all around the back? Pricey but cool.
