Adopted a homeless rifle
« on: July 05, 2020, 10:15:29 AM »
Went to the gun store on Friday, by the way I love my small mom and pop store. This rifle followed me home, now safe in the gun safe and I'm researching for which scope to put on it. This will mainly be a 400 yard range gun(400 yards is the longest range near me) I have others to hunt with, so if you have any suggestions please speak up. 308 with a treaded barrel, short action and Magpul stock

What is the budget for the scope?

For 400 and less, a 2.5-10x is just about perfect, however, 4-16 is also an ideal power range.

I was thinking in the $600-$800 dollar range but a friend and suggested the Primary Arms 4-14 44MM FFP scope. He said that it is in the $200-$300 range and is equal and can run with the $600-$800 scopes. I have never used one and to be honest never heard of Primary Arms before. My friend is in the desert on a all expense paid holiday with the military so not sure when I can shot his.

The new Vortex Strike Eagles are within your budget and getting some really great reviews.  I've looked through a couple and the glass is very nice for the price point.

Reviews on the Primary Arms are a bit mixed.  If only going out to 400 yards it might be ok for you.  The turret components are said to be plastic and don't track great.  They don't seem to hold up well to much abuse.

Primary Arms has some decent scopes. However I tend to like Vortex more. Like Bear said the Strike Eagles are pretty good, and within your budget, if you can save up a little more the Gen 2 PST scopes are quite nice as well. If you don't need illuminated reticle the Diamondback Tactical are decent scopes.
