Well, youngest is turning 16 this Oct. and has been eyeing toyotas. We/he just bought a 1995 4Runner, V6, auto. Needs an engine, but for $900 we can do that and knew up front.
Needs the basic TLC but for a 30 year old SUV, paint, seat covers ,etc. Options are to rebuild or swap motor, was told it was run low on oil, but runs.

I like the old 4-runners
My vote: Put an LS 5.3 in it

His friends say that already.

So I meant to make this a new build thread, but can't move it. I did split it so guess I need admin to fix. Then I'll link the two.

Pic of the undercarriage and rear. Will get more when we pickup tomorrow. Tags are current to boot.
Need to pull the tailgate out so the window works.

Talk about coincidence, that’s the same one my son bought, 95 4Runner with the 3.0 3vze engine unit I think. He’s been doing little things to make it run right and easier to drive. Now he ordered a new ac compressor and other odds and ends. We’ll see how it goes. If you do an LS swap, I think he will definitely follow along. He isn’t happy with the paltry power of the engine.

Yes, I hear the power is not great being just a 3 ltr.

Cool first ride, rebuild it as there isn’t much to them. 4cyl? If so it’ll sound like my wr450 and make similar power! :likebutton:
3 ltr V6. Rebuild kits are $500 after a quick search, used motors start about the same. Need to pull the motor either way, what the cylinder walls look like is the deciding point.

Copy assumed maybe that was still 42re (not a yota guy so just a guess)

That’ll be a great first rig! We owned a 95 long ago as well as an 02 and a 00.
- Great first ride

Thx Nate, guess I could have done that. Least it is all together.

Got her today. We couldn't push it onto the trailer, 4 of us! His dad had nice jeep and we winched it up.
Registered until 1-24 which is nice. Will register and no op it tomorrow, why pay insurance until it runs anyway.
Charging the battery, down a bunch of water. Tailgate needs repair (new going in), rear bumper (he thinks he has it) and we want running boards. I found a doner about an hour away with all those is needed, under $500.

Cool story!

So we have it home fine. He pressure washed it yesterday, looks really good cept the tailgate. Found a little rust on a roof mount is about the worst. Very straight, paint is OK but the clearcoat on the roof and hood is history.
We know the motor is tight, but it just turns over. Going to do a comp test and hoping only the lower bearings are bad. Probably pull the motor anyway, maybe a trans build too with 300K. We have 5-6 months until he can drive anyway.
The big news is we are going to take the suburban and keep it on the trailer at the storage yard until this is going. With that in mind, we made a winch mount today so moving it will be a snap.

Got a set of 16in steel wheels for free. Little diff offset but nothing a spacer wouldn't fix.
Sat found 2 more stock 15in alloy wheels, now he a has a whole set.
Still working on the windows. Found a missing relay, didn't help. Pretty sure its a power issue as the locks and all windows don't work.

The title says four runner but that’s a suburban

Jr I think what he’s getting at is that isn’t there a burb thread? If there is that winch mount should be in that thread. At least that’s my thinking.

Yeah, I was thinking that when I did it, but its just a couple posts. I fix it and leave maybe one posts moving most to the Spartan thread.
Today we went to PnP looking for odd parts, they only had 1 runner the right year that was stripped. Motor was pulled an laying there, felt free too.
We started pulling the motor on ours, should be out tomorrow. So many little things, he has never done one and I haven't for years. Get it pulled and check it out, if there real damage the one sitting at PnP is perfect!

Sub is getting going into storage until the runner is done.
-
4Runner got sold tonight, delivering tomorrow to Sac for fuel cost.
Sonoma, here we come!
