Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Topside Creeper
« on: December 31, 2015, 01:03:58 PM »
Anyone have one of these Topside Creeper? I have seen similar before all homemade.

With our little trucks this would be a godsend time after time.

Traxion seems to be the main brand, but $300 is about the going price.

Build Threads / S10 Blazer Mini Build
« on: December 29, 2015, 11:39:04 PM »
I have some surgery coming up and will be off each leg for 6+ weeks. With this in mind I need something I could drive that I didn't have to climb up into, fall down into and could haul 5 of us since I chauffeur kids around for school, not just my own.

I was looking for either an XJ or a blazer and found a 1998 S10 blazer for $1350. They wanted 2350 so I offered 1500 sight unseen until I could see it.

Has no power anything and KKBd at 1400 in good shape. It needed front end work, 2 new tires and died sometimes for no known reason. So I offered 1250 and we ended at 1350. Tags good till May and just ran $72 to transfer.

Drove it home, no issues but it had 6-8 inches of play in the steering. went to smog and "FAIL" (slightly high NoX) which probably just meant a tuneup. Get it home and it won't run. Start getting parts and being familiar with GM I went right to the Ign module (no run) then the coil (we have winner) and I am just out $20.

Got her cleaned up and my 13 year old daughter is eyeing it already as it has pink stripes.

So parts are coming in as we speak but here are a few pics for a primer;

Firearms / Weapons Safe-Storage "er whats in your closet"
« on: December 29, 2015, 11:11:51 PM »
Thought I would start a thread on Storage. Not on what guns you own (why give it away!)

Any hoo, show your storage, safe or ideas. Don't need your secrets but ideas are cool.

Here is my BIG safe in the garage. Liberty "Franklin 50" made by Liberty http://www.libertysafenorcal.com/safe-franklin-safes-ps-6.html

This on has the dehumidifier, door pockets and motion light I put in.

I keep the American Flag over it for a few reasons, but I like it!

It is full with very little ammo. Lots of parts but boxes of those around the garage too.

I have another off brand about half the size in the house, behind a dead bolt in a small closet.

So, "whats in your closet" or den, man room or where ever?

Build Threads / Thinking of a smaller SUV, comments
« on: December 10, 2015, 07:25:45 PM »
OK, I have surgery coming up and kids growing so this may be a hand me down to. Looking at older vehicles around 90's or something.

Big thing is I need to be able to get in and out without climbing up or falling down with normal size doors. I need to stay off one leg or the other for 6 weeks, then some rehab.

What comes to mind are the 4 door blazer or the Jeep XJ. I know the chevy is a full frame but not sure about the XJ. Both seem to be priced in the 1-2K area. Chevy comes with a V6 mostly and the XJ with I-6 or V8.

I am familiar with the GM stuff but not the Jeeps. Want to get something near stock for the access.

So how about some feedback guys. Likes and dislikes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Goobered up leg
« on: November 30, 2015, 04:05:45 PM »
Well, after having my sciatic flare up about 2 weeks ago I was back on my feet, or so I thought.

Using my little auger I hit a cement post I thought the pool guys had dug out. When it caught I let go but somehow I got a leg to close and wham. Felt like I got hit by a bat. I cussed and limped around (no one was home) and got the auger out and put away. The handle that got me was just about a ft from the motor and covered in rubber.

It felt numb, didn't break the skin but was begining to swell quite a bit. I took a motrin and called it a day. Later that night it was really starting to talk to me. I big welt appeared and the lower leg was begining to swell too. I had a day trip to Reno planned and would darned if a sore leg was going to stop me. This included a after hours invite to Cabelas just before thankgiving.

The trip goes good (albeit in spurts) and thanksgiving is good, but the leg is not feeling better, so I give Kaiser a call and they get me in in less than an hour. Next thing I know I am sent to the ER for treatment and spend the next 6 hours there. Blood tests, IV for meds, ultrasound for clots, probing with a big ol needle for any fluids (none) and my arse in pain from the ER bed!! Can't bend the knee anywhere near 90 and told sitting is the worst thing for it, which is what I did almost the whole time up to this point.

So now I have been in beed for the last 4 days, lag propped up over my head. Putting pressure on the leg feels like someone is dragging up down the leg. Finally dragging my laptop from the garage as I am going stir crazy and have been movied out!

Heres a few pics of it from right after the hit to today. I can bent the knee at least enough to put socks on now and standing is not an event. Now having never been shot (but seeing a few), I believe this would be the same shock trauma you would see to surrounding tissue. My leg was rock hard from the knee to the groin showing bruising all around. After 3 days I am off the narcs just so I could sleep or move some.

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Signing waivers to buy parts!!!!!!!!!
« on: November 16, 2015, 11:55:43 PM »
So a couple months back I heard to Summit and get a few things. Since they have me on file (probably like everyone else) I had to sign a waver to buy parts since I live in Ca.

I didn't think of this until I placed another order today for some more primer, bulbs and jet (thats the BAD PART) and had to click on the box saying it was for an off road vehicle.

These regs and liability stuff is so far out of hand I can't believe it.

Another friend said he went to get a HC Mag from up there and they wouldn't sell to him either!!! I mean what if you just want to blow a few rounds before you go back to Ca??

Funny, they watch things like this, do roadside emission checks but we can't get them to make a national data base for those not allowed to have firearms,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Tires, Wheels, and Suspension / Considering SAS for the LBZ
« on: November 06, 2015, 12:33:44 PM »
OK, so I have my 06 LBZ that I am going to lift. Runs great with 120k on the clock. Have a complete Cognito 4-6 lift ready to bolt on, but other projects have priority for the short term. I have been adding up what I have invested in the lift and the normal issues with the GM IFS when lifted or not and all those parts that need upgrading or replacing all the time.

With all that in mind, doing and SAS doesn't sound all that bad for what I get from it. I figure with what I have spent on the lift so far, I may have been able to pay for the SAS already.

I am thinking rugged, not a rock crawling monster. Simple leafs, cross over steering and its done. HP Dana 60s are not hard to find, but not cheap either and then you build them up some. I have read some issues with getting the ABS to work, but that is about the worst.

I can make it up myself, but kits are there too.  Many seem to want to do 3 or 4 links with coil-overs but that seems extreme and gets $$$ for the right COs.

I see 3 ales as a choice while I go over this. A regular Dana 60 from a Dodge, a HP ford Dana 60 or a Super 60 (4 inch tubes) or even a AAM 9.5.

Don has a nice 60 ready for CMax, but not sure if he is still going there.

Thoughts??

D.O.T. / Fired for arresting a non compliant school student!!
« on: October 28, 2015, 04:03:09 PM »
Guess you all know about the SC Deputy who was fired for arresting a girl for not following school rules (using a cell phone in class)

The Deputy was fired today as not "following proper procedure" when he arrested the student who pushed away when he told he to get up and leave.

The SHERIFF was ball less and turned it over to the FBI for investigation.

The Deputy is Ben Fields who even just received awards for his service.

I hope he sues the CRAP out of the Sheriffs office. You do what a cop says and work out the details later, you resist, all bets are off.

I saw nothing wrong with what he did as did several others who were there, even the principal, who called for the officer.

I have this in the gun control topic, but thought a new thread would be nice on it.

I would love to see the existing laws enforced, say like for immigration too!!

Do you know that under current law for every 1 US born citizen, 7 are allowed to immigrate in the next 20 years!!! This does not includes illegals.

Did you know in the 20s-30s we closed off immigration to allow those who had come over time to assimilate into the US culture. Today they want to change us!

The 14th AM. has nothing to do with giving citizenship to illegals. It was passed to allow the slaves who were born here, brought over legally to become citizens.

Only congress has the right to set the rules on becoming a naturalized citizen,,,,,,,,,,

Everything Trailer, Camper, or RV related / Saw a scary one today,,,,,,,
« on: September 04, 2015, 11:44:19 PM »
As many off you know our trucks can tow quite a bit. I have even seen a few pulling doubles, normally a 5th with a boat behind it. Not a terrible thing if you don't go over the GVW "AND" have the proper braking for the combination.

Now with that said the 1st trailer MUST be a 5th/gooseneck type trailer and the 2nd can be a bumper pull. Proper baking for the CVGW is a must and is what CHP will look at most of time.

What I saw today (no picture) and at highway speed was a what looked a dodge, pulling I would say a 25-30 bumper pull trailer with a boat behind that. It was a nice FG type boat too, not a little alum toy. This is illegal and  an accident waiting to happen.

Now in Ca it is also legal to have a passenger in a trailer as long as the trailer is a 5th type and the passengers can communicate with the cab.

There are also MANY other rules and endorsments that come into play, endorsments, commercial or not, length.

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Ben Carson gives in,,,,,,,,,,

Drones, Boats, Flying and Floating Things / Looking at inflatables
« on: August 19, 2015, 02:52:42 AM »
Thinking for some time about a smallish inflatable around 10 ft for fishing and other things. This size will go into the shell if deflated a little and will do well on a trolling motor and AGM batteries. I can get a 40lb trolling motor for $100 and have several AGM batteries and can charge in use with a single solar panel.

I am seeing them starting for around 600 for what I would say is OK. Most are made from .9mm or 1.2mm pvc now. I want 2 bench seats at least so that sets the size at around 9.8ft minimum.

I seem to be drawn to the round or squarer bows and rounded ends on the tubes. Some have splash guards all around and on the transom for that little wave that follows you. Some have alum decks, other have air-filled decks.

I can always get an outboard, but then I have to go through all the registration crud.

Feedback, recommendations??

Watching and learning here too guys with these latest threads and here is where I am.

At 57 I have a 7, 10 and 12 year old. Happy kids, but trying,,,,,,,,,

12 year old girl, who thinks I am always wrong and blaming her for all.

10 year old boy who is immature and has mild ADD.

7 year old is great, but I am a little to hard on em sometimes, well all of em really.

Raised by Marine DI, gunny. Mom says my childhood was like "The Great Santini", but I don't think it was that hard.

My real work here is the oldest boy. My daughter will come around, I can see it.

I just need to count to 1000 a little more often,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Just venting for now.

Build Threads / Helping out at local air museum
« on: August 07, 2015, 03:45:47 PM »
Kinda a build thread so I thought I would through it in hear. Got a call last week from a Lt at the Sheriffs dept where I used to work. The Vacaville Airport has a Jimmy DoLittle Museum and they need a had with some fabrication.

Got out there today with kids in tow and I will be making a few towing hooks for a PT17 and a Lockheed Harpoon. The PT17 was a Jelly Belly show aircraft and still in flying condition, the Harpoon is not.

Should be lots of fun and I get to play around with my favorite ERA of planes! In fact my first plane ride was in a PT17 at the old Orange county airport about 45 years ago.

Then of course show him your guns!!!  8)

I added this a few months back but had a slight issue. Turned out to be a pinched line.

Anyway, here is how I added it tot my 06 Dmax that still needs to be smogged every other year.

Also since I just added 35in tires mileage is down a little more so getting this working should offset the drag.

The kit I got was a universal kit form AEM without tank #30-3002. This kit is still available but has a upgraded controller.

Firearms / Piston vs gas AR build?
« on: July 29, 2015, 02:05:47 AM »
Guys just looking for opinions on my next AR build.

I have wanted to build a longer range AR for some time. So I just got a fluted SS 20 inch barrel chambered in 223 Wylde, 1-8 twist.

Opinions on using a piston vs gas and stock options. All my ARs are gas, and us magpul moe stocks.

Sure it is just an AR, not a real long range round. But what the heck it will be nice not have all carbines (cept one 300aac pistol)

OK, so like a lot of you I like big tires but don't have a big lift, some have none at all. Sure you can get a 33 inch in there, maybe. But with a stock height truck you are limited to about a 285 (32in) if you get lucky. Saw this for the 07+ trucks but not for the "new body style" as they are known.

So here is the clearance you have stock with a 35 inch tire. Now this truck has Cognito upper control arms with new keys giving about a 3 inch lift while still giving some down travel for a decent ride.

I started this with the tires on, but you just can't swing a hammer in there that way even with the tire turned out. I mixed both sides up here but you get the idea.

131
Well, after the little mishap with trying to add a ported fuel fitting, here is the repair.

Oringinal thread is here; http://real-man-truckworks-and-survival.com/index.php?topic=1150.0

The worst part of this besides causing the problem, is draining the radiator. No drain on the LBZ, you have to pull the lower hose. Held on with a clip like the cooler hoses the clip is a bare to get out. Slid the hose back and it drains OK, about a bucket full was all I did.

Next you have to pretty much pull everything behind the AC compressor to get the the top of the CP3.

It was more of a pain than it was hard, but the fitting leaking is below the fitting circled. That fitting goes right into the high pressure side of the CP3 and the line I was trying to remove goes to where you add the touted ported fuel fitting.

132
Guys, need some help asap, the max is down!! I was doing the wheel well fix for the larger tires (lots of pics for here) and thought I would open up the little orifice for the fuel rail while I changed the fuel filter lines.

While trying to get the line loose, I noticed that the fitting on the pump was turning with it, so I just tightened the upper fitting back up and now the max won't start. I can see fuel leaking from the fitting, not sure if the hard line is tweaked, but figure it is. No codes but no run either. I can pump up the fuel with the hand primer, but it never gets hard to pump now.

Still fighting the loosing prime issue and tried this at the same time. I did put new fuel lines on from the filter to the engine but see there are others in there too.

Do you think I can just re-torque the fitting and replace the line?

While I'm in there I see there are a couple more rubber lines, but a lot more work to get to!!

I am in a fix and need the max for a scout trip in 4 days!!!

THX!!!

Build Threads / What do you do with a 2006, 115k DMax,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
« on: July 10, 2015, 08:03:50 PM »
Well, you do a makeover of course!!

I bought this truck new in 2006 after the insurance paid off after a garage fire. I actually bought a 1500hd first with the 6ltr gas but it never had the power or mileage I desired. So I traded it in for 5k less than I bought it for, which I thought was a good. Finding the Dmax I wanted was no trouble, but getting the $$ I wanted for it was.

The 1500hd was the same color and trim but had the 9.5 rear. Best I ever got in mileage was 16 coming back from LA and driving like a baby.

You can see the result of the fire in the background. (I have a build thread here; http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=704660&highlight=garage

Then I added tires, wheels, exhaust and a tuner. You can see my 96 burb for sale back there to.

General Maintenance, How to/DIY projects / LBZ loosing prime
« on: June 07, 2015, 11:56:39 AM »
Having an issue with my LBZ loosing prime. Doesn't do it all the time but runs fine otherwise after I pump it a few times. 113k miles

I run the Cat 049 filter up top, alum bleed screw, rebuilt filter head and no leaks I can see. 52 titan tank

Running a Kennedy lift pump that free flows but won't dry prime.

Thinking I should do all the upper lines and open up that restrictive port for a little more flow (DSP5 tune)

Is there a kit or what size lines would I need for this? Any other ideas

« on: April 22, 2015, 10:38:30 PM »
So I get a set of brakes for the 06 LBZ thinking they have got to be getting down by now.

I have 113k miles, not real hard miles but I don't baby it either.

So I pull the tires and WOW, they look new!!! Rotors are fine, no glazing, pitting or marks of any kind.

I checked all and find the same thing. Saved a C note for Spartan.

Well, I needed my picker and the CTD had been hangin on it for a couple weeks now since my stand (that needs upgrading) has a 5.3 for the elky on it.

So I grab some wheels, 1/4 angle and plate and see what I can do.

2x3 seems about right for sliding into the picker and holding the 1k 6BT with few parts hanging out.

Finally got to use the plasma (forgot how nice they cut) and it cut threw the 1/4 like butter.

Added plates for the wheels on the corners and to act like gussets.

After seeing BD M1101 it got me to thinking along those lines too. I needed something easy to hookup and tow with lots of room and didn't break the bank.

Sure a low dump trailer is nice, but not for camping and they get pricey even used. So a little search on "searchtempest" and I found them on ebay for $800 to $2000. Well the $800 were just 350mi from here and near a friends house in Tehachapi. So a call was made to arrange which one since 5 were listed and they were both in tan and cammo. Its take your pick, so I did. The guy said bring cash, so I hope for a deal.

By the way if you use Craigslist at all (don't we all) try searchtempest (one word) It searches all of CL, adds and ebay based on distance, so you need to search each area and ebay at the same time. Sure it has a few adds but easy to navigate anyway.

Grabbed a pintle from TSC and HF magnetic tow lights and told the wife I was off to see a friend and would be back the next day, which I was. Had just got back from a fishing/shooting day with the boys and finally hit the sack at 0100. Got up at 0400 an was on the road with coffee little sleep (only had 4 hours the night before too)

This place was a way off the beaten path just east of the SIX FLAGS on hwy 5. The business does military movie props and sold off stuff as needed.

They have 7 of the trailers and said pick one, but not the last one (they were buried in a corner) So about 10 minutes later I say I will take the cammo that is next to last and we dug it out (forklift sure helped).

Got her hooked up and find the HF tow lights are wired backwards for brake/running lights. Its still daylight so whatever. So as I pay the guys I say you saved ebay fees and got cash, how about a spare tire. He agreed in about 2 seconds. So for $800 I get 2005 M1101 with a spare H1 tire/rim, plus they all are 12 bolt and match my 5 at home.

Head out and go through Antelope Valley up 14 and over 58 into Tehachapi. My bud lives in a little private area called Bear Valley about 9 miles out. Got a pass waiting at the gate for me make it to his place and kill the evening catching up on BS and drinking home-brew whisky. I did buy them dinner at the Golf Course first though. Needless to say I slept about 10 hours that night. Morning came and we had some coffee and ran down to the grill and got massive breakfast burritos.

Later i got the valley tour as the weather rolled in. Saw some pig tracks and finally found the local Elk heard. They didn't seem to mind us much, just no threat to them around up here. The farmland in the back is the San Joaquin Valley about 4500ft below us.

We then went and flew RC Gliders for awhile on a place called Convict Hill as it overlooks Tehachapi SP. Hands got numb so we came down about about 1/2 hour than had to fix the trailer wiring. He gave me a pint of juice and a pound of pig sausage and I was off.

Does the last picture look familiar??

OK, who makes a steering arm for the stock 4x4 box to do the crossover steering. This is done so much there has to be a non centered arm that will work without changing to a 2 wheel drive steering box!!!

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / P Pump pickup adventure
« on: February 12, 2015, 06:28:09 AM »
Well, so I find a P Pump motor for the Sub swap just 80 miles from the house. Take my 87 elky to pick it up. Yeah the tranny makes a little noise and it needs rear brakes but I will drive it easy and be carefull,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

So going through Stockton and it lurches a little on the freeway like something let loose. I am a little over 1/2 way there and power is solid so I keep going. I notice the RPMs are up a little so i figure the lock up clutch is gone, no biggie.

Get the guys house in Salida Ca and look a the motor. About what you expect for a 300k motor, lots of oil! Oil is good, intake, exhaust and turbo looks good. Injector lines are gone as well as the injectors (replacing them anyway)

So I make my deal and we load it up, all goes well and I get a 2nd turbo and some other little extras with it. I go to get on the freeway home and click, the tranny lets go. I pull to the side and call for a tow asking how much to get me home (not AAA) and am told there are NO TRUCKS AVAILABLE and the one that will come wants $700 to tow me 82 miles. I say no thanks to that tow and say get me another, nothing, nothing and I call back and a told there is nothing. Now come on it is just 2100 on a Wednesday night I say, but nothing.

So up to this time I have been contacted twice by both CHP and the Sheriff telling them all is OK and a tow is on the way. It feels funny when I am being contacted watching all the rift raft going by. So finally after about 2 hours I have a ride in route to get me home and I plane to leave the elky at the guys house I got the motor from. He can't help as he had a couple beers so he won't drive, OK. Finally CHP come by again and I request a tow, which arrives in 20 minutes!! The chips and I shoot the bull for the 20 minutes and it runs me $200 to have the elky pulled 1 mile away, but I plane getting that back from the insurance company. My ride gets there 20 minutes later (77 year old mom, wifey with the kiddies)

So I get home at 0300 and now reserving a trailer to pickup the Elky with motor still loaded up tomorrow, about the same time my tires should be in so I may swing through to get them too.

I will continue this in the Sub Build thread and add a few pics,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I am a little tired right now!!

Anyway, my trusty 2 ton picker works fine. Has lifted about everything along with a few stumps in the backyard.

Problem is it doesn't fold quite flat enough to let me open the side gate.

Options were to rebuild the gate to open less????????, no.

Move the jack, not yet.

Modify the jack to fold flatter and make it stronger with bushings, yep!!
