JR's Tractor n trailer thread
« on: May 22, 2019, 09:52:05 PM »
Well, with the land comes other things, namely the Kubota tractor and the Maxx'd trailer. Not heading up for a few weeks with scouts and holidays.

Trailer works great, tows great and handles whatever I have put on it so far. It does need removable sides and a storage box for all the tow goodies. Also going to add a 6k winch I have laying around for good measure. Plan on a couple shipping containers which will need moving once or twice. Hydro solenoid got stuck getting the Kubota, but a couple wraps fixed that.

Tractor needs a little more TLC, looks like it was near the ocean for a while. Lights need work, general maintenance and the ROP will be modified. It needs to fold down to fit into storage vs getting HC containers that are double the price.

Plopped the bucket off by the trailers and parked it by the Polaris getting it of the neighbors yard who just moved out (of course I had their blessing)

Ordered a set of quick release pallet forks from Titan and will order a will a weld on thumb tomorrow. They have a great point system giving me $25 in points for the forks, and the prices are lower than Ebay, ship free. Getting the mechanical thumb for now, will add hydro later. Kubota is setup for a thumb, but it has a quick attach bucket, so a Kubota thumb is out (and crazy $$$) Already got the box/blade for it, left it on the trailer in the storage yard.

First thing is finishing all the little service items. Still has a leaking hub which I can do for $50. Want more lights too.

My idea on the ROP is too remove the top and front, then hinge the rear loop or make it a slide off unit. Ideas welcome.

Little damage on the right foot rest and a cover is needed for those hoses. I know it is the wrong side, but I want a step on that side too.

A little more info on the new BB. Tractor is rated for a 72in and at 1040bs. My BB2572 is 810 lbs and heavy is better on these, right?

3 questions though,

1) want to mount a tool box on the tractor, thinking a 50cal ammo can on the rear ROPS. What do you think, bigger, some place else and recommended extras?

2) dash instraments, like angle/tilt and a volt meter. The main dash is on the right fender so manage when using the BH. Maybe a cool LCD with a rear camera when I'm dragging?

3) hooks on the loader, it has none. Thinking 3, ends and center.

Input!!

Spend the extra on HC containers. You won’t regret it later.

Kubota makes a folding ROPS. I have it on my L3900

Light bar forward and rear at the top of the canopy will give you good light to work by.

I have a small tool box on mine behind the seat. Large channel locks, hitch pins , wasp spray. If I was to add anything to mine it would be a cell phone holder and a 12V port for charging the phone.

JR, if those handles on bottom corner of each bucket are welded decent you won’t need hooks on bucket. Wrap chain over top of bucket lip and run chain thru the handles and loop back into itself.

Ya, I'm in

Someone start a "Go fund JR" "Get out of the SSK" (Socialist state of Kalifornia)
I'll get the banners and T-shirts "Free JR" going

Nate you do a cookie and hot wings sale, Tex, sell one of your 5th wheel campers, Bobby-two hours overtime pay, Cuda- put him in for welfare and food stamps, then arrange the food stamp sale to the illegals, Ken, offer free ditch digging for $500 as a special, Shawn tell Baylee to go get a forth job and donate that, Norm can sell something out of that barn he forgot he owned over on the property he forgot he owned, Tate, go crabbin' and make, say two thousand crab/egg rolls and sell em, pay yourself back for the expense and send the remaining $2 (After taxes) in, Bob, go do something (really, just do something ;-0), Samm, sell one of your polar bear hides, We can get Ashley to sell that ridiculous mudding jeep thing, he should get $20 for it if he really tries. All new members since April donate a dollar, that will add a dollar, and all the guests who come here and don't register donate a penny which should yield $234,845,998, Salt lake city Dave, make an offer to the boss, he pays you an additional $5 for each 5 minutes you can keep from talking, and over a month or so that will add another five bucks, the other pesky air force dave could offer up one of his children for sale, shouldn't miss just one, Minnesota Mike, sell some ice to eskimos, and Ryan could, err, well, heck, I don't know what Ryan could do. Blaine, if he is still on could secretly contract for a CIA assignation and donate 10%, kinda of like a tithe, Matt down in the Georgia can bless the whole thing and bath it with prayer, and with all that, we can free JR!

Yea, sorry gents. Just checked, had the percolator set to "Strong."

Hey, JR, best to knock off the chunky rust and you can put some red oxide primer on there if it makes you feel any better, or just before you put it up for sale, but just wipe standard grease over the rusty/cleaned metal parts while you own it. Nothing is going to stick to those surfaces with the pressures they see.

Much of my July will be away from home.

D World trip, scout camp then a week alone mostly at the ranch (named Raptor Ridge by the kids)

Access road, pad and well are the next 3 things. May just drop a container at the bottom just to store things.

Going to star the thumb tomorrow.

Today the forks came in from Titan. Quick attach and they work great. US MADE.

Also got these weld on chain hooks. Figure 3 on the bucket (ends and center) 2 on the forks and one on the backhoe.

Just about any equipment dealer should have them. Picked up ours at John Deere. Otherwise you can get them through Grainger. https://www.grainger.com/product/3YCN6?cm_mmc=PPC:+MSN+PLA&s_kwcid=AL!2966!10!8973609899!1102900017563&ef_id=W7VH4gAAAF4RcGm3:20190601115243:s

Got the thumb on yesterday. Hardest part was welding without proper gloves.

First was getting the plate setup. Had the youngest help with clamping it, just a hand short for that!

Made a couple lines and ground it all clean.

Setup my new 12ft mig gun from welding city with 030 wire. Worked great and the extra few feet helped.

Burned it in heavy since this might be stressed a tad sometimes. Plus the BH arm is an H beam so it is only welded on the edges, not all around.

Think the mounts metal is really cheap as no matter how I set the Miller 211 I could not get a clean sootless weld. Maybe its the Chinese wire too?

Cleaned and painted it looks fine so I put the rest on. Folds up nice and flat and the teeth mesh nice at 90*.

I wish it opened a little more but the quick attach bucket folds up a little farther than a normal so the thumb is a little high.

Pardon my question JR. But I have have read multiple times.  Mechanical thumb vs hydrologic.    I see no mechanical movement in this thumb.    It looks fixed?  You have adjustment in where the thumb rests but I am lost at what this does vs a basic piece of angle welded at the same angle that thumb is sitting?

Think we crossed posts Dave. It has some adjustment, just wish it opened a little more.

When opened past 90* it could use another 2.5 inch of teeth. Their measurements are over all when you purchase, not pin to end so it is really around 22in long. Next size was 32 anyway.

So besides adding another bit of bite to it, I want to go hydro too. Closed it is 16in, pin to pin. Just need to measure to see if 12in travel will open it up more.

May add some bushings to tighten it up some and give more wear area.

So changing the Hydro oil and all the filters is around a $400 deal. That is without the super hydro oil too.

Uses 2 big filters and a smaller high pressure filter. 2 big filters are magnetized, kinda cool. Small one has a CNC base and has notches for custom.

I sure made a mess. Thank goodness this is only every 500hrs. Did a little cleanup on it. Lots of corrosion, think it had to be around the salt water and not taken care of. Now have a good starting point.

Pulled the fender out a little, ratchets beat a hammer for this. Broke 1 bolt off and will have to run a little take weld for now to hold it. Also adding a step on the control side (right) where I cut the edge off.

Pic of my container before paint too.

JR, messin with your thread, apologies.

But I am so happy you purchased an orange tractor.

So, remember how I've had so much trouble with my 2720?

Keeps falling apart...And I want to say we are now on the ninth time. So I was spraying it off yesterday and noticed one of the pulleys had fallen apart again. And that was after one, yes only one grass cutting at the farm.

little john deere tractors are so unreliable, that for mowing or anything hard, they are just about useless. I can honestly say mine has been broken down about half of the time I have owned it!

So when get up to Reno I run by the Kubota dealer for my 3 point kit. We open the $600 box and it is just the 2 lower arms. I ask, where is the Kit? Should have the lower arms, center link, 2 lower arm links and 2 stabilizers.

Tell the guys I am not paying $600 for this, I ordered a 3 point kit. May just get a refund and put something together from TSC, who looks to have all the parts in stock. Still waiting for the manager to call back on it.

Trip home had 1 little quirk in it. Was getting a strange hop from the trailer on the freeway. Almost like the harmonics on the freeway grids. Thinking it could be a tire or something I stopped in the CC lot again for a meal and checked the tires. I had let some air out of the truck tires for the ride home (down to 50psi) I had had everything almost maxed out for the trip up (65 truck, 80 trailer) and all was fine. Let the trailer tires down to 60psi and it was fine after that. Got a little over 15mpg on the way

And on the thumb. Works OK as it is but 2 issues.

1] claw is to short, needs to be another 3 to 6 inches longer to work right. Measures correct at 24 inch, but with the QR bucket it is short unless the bucket is at 90* to grab, not always the best.

2] the bar is too short and only allows the claw to open just past 90*. I am simply going to add a spacer to it as later I can see how good will be.

Made an extension for the thumb, but no chance to use it yet.

Front lights don't work but this little HF work light does wonders until I get to it. Just $22 with coupon, worth every penny.

On the Polaris. Has been running rough as in not moving off idle and surging. Put new gas in it and checked fuel pump, holding at just under 40psi, so within specs.

Checked the TPS and I get nothing, then a spike when the throttle is moved. Guess a common issue, new one on order.

Love to see more pics of that little light. Seems kinda expensive for HF so it warrants more detail....

Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

Ordered a universal 3 point kit for under $300 shipped so I can finally use the BB. Ben talking with the Reno Kabota about the kit they got but they are dragging their feet, so just getting a refund.

Kub ran great this weekend but the seat mount is shot.

It swivels OK is about it. Suspension is rusted solid, would be nice but not really needed, yet.

Finally got the slider loose and now it wont lock back up. Was so close I was getting cramps working the HST (a god send for its use!)

Seat is OK, but the arm rests are solid and folding might be better.

Thought I broke the thing on Sat morning. Was going to work on the road and it stopped moving. Front wheels spun so the 4x is working OK. Then I look back and see I left a arm down on the BH and had been dragging it for about 150ft.  It did feel like a brake was on or something (had been checking for that 150ft) Ran so much better after I lifted it back up! (put it down as I swung the BH arm over for parking overnight)

I got using the bucket pretty fast. Found the auto leveling is not the way to go too for this work. This thing will push good, but the bucket rolls over rocks way to easy. Ending up moving many by hand.

Backhoe will take some getting used too, never really learned to use one. A must for the flattening the off camber road.
