Torque Converter discussion
« on: March 30, 2018, 09:40:22 AM »
OK, let's talk torque converters

The subject vehicle will be C-Max, a 2011 LML Silverado in great condition with right at 90,000 miles

The truck has 37" tires, 4.56 gears, a stock trans with a deep aluminum pan, and is working with a soon to be 600HP engine.

The line pressures and shift programs have all been modified with EFI Live tuning and frankly the thing shifts very well.

I use the truck as my daily driver (Except for the horrible turning radius), Who would want to drive anything else...except maybe a Land Rover/Range rover...oops, sorry me British side crept out there!

I tow mostly light loads around 4000 lbs but on occasion get up around 8000 lbs, but seldom anything higher. I tow about 25% of the time (Really) and the truck gets into 4-Wheeling situations almost weekly.

So with all these factors in mind, what or whose torque converter would be best for this application

Note: Based on the advice from several sources in the diesel performance world, I will be keeping the stock transmission in it's EFI "Adjusted" state in the truck without replacing it with some stronger variant.

8700 is a pretty good number with my lard butt and full tank of fuel

I put it on a scale Ken, 8700 is what it said

But that was some years ago

The added mud caked up in the fenders has added a ton or three no doubt

Joking: No mud on her! I get the truck stop guys to spray wax up underneath, and I get almost no mud sticking!

Really? hmm. I didn't realize you had it on a scale. Mine was 9800 last time I went to the dump, and you have a front bumper and a shell on back, but I do have a fith wheel hitch.

Well, maybe my memory is off, but probably not far off, in theory.....
Only difference in the dually is 2 extra tires and some leaf springs, right?
I'm on 35s,  rear winch and bumper, full tool box and cankles riding shotgun (don't be jealous like Shawn). I'm only carrying 57 gallons compared to your 300 but who's counting!

Ken,

I'm sure of the weight back then. Honestly, I do not know if that is with the rear bumper replacement or the 57 gal tank...Not sure when those mods came in with respect to the date with the scale.

I'll pop on over sometime soon and get it reweighed.

https://www.dieselpowerproducts.com/p-10058-afe-power-f3-torque-converter-1200-stall-01-15-gm-66l-duramax-a1000.aspx

Lifetime warranty and good to 1000hp, should hold you over for awhile
Shawn, you have the only recommendation...And you're not even a diesel truck guy!!

And BTW, the converter you recommended is on my list

There are three offerings from Diesel Ops, that I can use. ANd I want to sent them the bulk of my business because of the future payoffs for them and us if a good relationship should take off

Regarding the converter you recommended (was it just a shot in the dark?? Or do you have specific knowledge/experience?)
There is also have an ATS available which seems to be lacking information and a B&D unit from Diesel Ops. They seem to like the B&D units. I found it odd that SunCoast or some of the more popular builders were not present for duty, although, I can have the D-O folks score me that if I so choose.

All three have triple clutches, billet cover, furnace brazed fins, HD springs, Torrington bearing and the other good stuff. Really the same converter from three different manufacturers. All three lower the stall significantly.

Diesels go the opposite direction than gassers do.

Gas engines build torque with increasing RPM to a point, but generally, one needs to have the converter flash higher to get into that torque band to enjoy a performance increase. A converter like that in a diesel would all of a sudden have a tsunami of torque coming along with broken parts, and immediately be at the RPM upper limit.

From what I have read, I want a lower stall converter, like something that will hook up at 1200RPM-1300RPM. The truck is already making 500-600 ft./lbs. of torque at that low RPM. That kind of converter has a rear seat of the pants boost and will lower 0-60MPH times by one full second. They build less heat when pulling a trailer, and allow the engine to work in its power band a lot better when towing or on long grades, the places where engines are really put to the test.

Don, technically I “was” a diesel guy having owned three different Ford 1 tons & oversaw half a dozen Ford & Dodge trucks pulling steel around. I’d love to have another it just doesn’t fit the bill currently & unfortunately I might add.

Two companies I used for parts with good experience were ATS (located 20 mins from me now btw) & AFE. So I pulled up ATS website and low and behold they sell AFE ( don’t think I purchased AFE stuff from them in the past so I was surprised a bit ). Then I just found one I thought fit the bill well.  I have no experience with that converter though frankly. I also have no experience with Chevy Diesels so there are far more people on here light years ahead of me in that regard. Just my 2 cents and instinct of one which I would look hard at if I were you.

Back when I was dreaming foolishly, the one Shawn mentioned was one, and another was a 1056 or 1058 something.

They’re likely on your short list also.
No experience with em, just lots of reading. FWIW.

Its looking like the B&D

Great price and they have lots of experience with them with no issues

These guys continue to say the stock trans will hold the 625HP/1200+ Torque the new combo will make with no worries, especially after the torque converter

BTW, I told them about you, Sam, They think you're crazy too living that far north!

Some people think that.

I’m not far enough some days...
Got a road...
And a plane that sometimes comes. Seems to be weather...er whether they want to fly.

I was ready to pull twins and a bunch of other foolish things.
Foolish due to the 200 mile gravel road. Stayed stock-ish enough I can get parts still.

I probably need to start thinking tans tho.

This is where I’m at too I think. Just based on mileage. 260 something thousand miles.
Never limped or any of the too much business, just getting there IMO.

Suncoast was the 1056, or 1058 now that I’m having these flashbacks.

And Ken, there’s at least three more towns north between me and him.

From previous experience.   You’ll call the canandians and do what they tell ya to...... but I will suggest anyway you get with Even over at limitless diesel.

He would be MikeLs counterpart on the east side of our beloved US Of A.  Evan would be a good sound board too talk options.   I have one of his in my truck and like it for Smokey burn outs and regular Hood Rat Punk Kid activities as you would call it

Folks, There is another issue regarding my using this truck as a driver.

Suffice it to say it is problematic that this truck might ever be operated legally on a public road...
