General Vehicle Related Discussion / Re: New truck options« on: April 01, 2018, 02:53:22 PM »
Dave, I had 3 or 4 trips back to the dealer with DEF issue problems. Poor quality warning mostly. The dealer stayed on the problems and solved the issue with sensor replacement. NOX sensors as I remember, but am betting Ken knows which ones are the problem. My concern was having the thing go into limp mode because the computer thought the def was bad. Never did go into limp and I enjoyed the truck towing or not. On my 2016 the main computer had to be replaced with only a couple thousand miles on it. That could have happened with either gas or diesel. No issues at all since then.

I do not constantly tow more than 10,000 lbs and have to disagree with you guys. I had the 6.0 GM gas in 3 pickups and had to replace exhaust manifolds and other system parts because the heat from towing destroyed them. I got very tired of listening to the engine trying to destroy its self going uphill. Plenty of power but if you had to slow down for any reason it was very hard to get the rpm back up. Gas mileage sucked towing anything, heavy or not. Other than the problems with the DEF system on my 2011, the diesel has been very reliable and maintenance does not seam any more expensive or time consuming. I keep the engine as it came from the factory, and have the maintenance done as recommended. I think the bigger issue is cost to get into the diesel to start with. Take out a longer loan or pay more each month. If you can afford a diesel and tow at all, it is a better choice. Just have to be a bit careful where the front tires go as the diesel is heavier and you can get stuck more easily.

Charles, what did you go with for a pool water heater? We used solar water heaters on the roof to help with the community pool heater. Poor installation or winterizing resulted in freeze damage so we now only use the propane heater. The solar didn't work all that well up North with the trees and so many cloudy days, but they did help.

Fill a 5 gallon bucket or similar half full of water. push a stick or rod through an empty soda can. Put a couple strips of peanut butter down the can. Place the can over the bucket so that the can is in the middle of the bucket. The idea is that the mouse will crawl out to the can on the rod. When it crawls up on the can to get the bait, the can rotates and the mouse drops into the bucket and drowns in the water. The can should still have bait on it and continue to work. Depending on where you place the bucket you may need to build a ramp up to the bucket.
1219

Like Ken, if the cable pullers don't work, set up rollers under it and roll it into place. I moved a shed with 4 inch pipe rolling on 6x8 timbers, hardest part was trying to stop it before it ran into the apple tree which actually stopped it.

Yes , I agree time to put in the overflow piping. I would go with one larger pipe rather than two smaller but it isn't my pond. Size the overflow and leave some room for bigger runoff. Better to be too much at first than fighting a failure later. Other idea would be a rock lined overflow swale area. That must be some real clay soil as muddy as the water is.

So Shawn, where exactly do you stand on this? You can not have it both ways. I think the bump stock being legal is going in the wrong direction to be considered worth fighting for. I don't want my 2nd rights to go away, but still have to look at real problems. I won't be handing over my mags or rifles, but do think there is middle ground we can work with. If I can not buy an auto rifle without paying a premium , why should I be able to buy a bump stock and end up damn close to the same result.

And when the plows get to the area, fighting all the abandoned cars just slows down their work. Every area has its own requirements for calling in the crews after hours. Just depends on where you are at the time. Plow trucks could be working but just not where you happen to be.

What are you building? / Re: Big Dave's honey do's; what Big Dave does when handling/not handling twins« on: February 13, 2018, 10:19:39 PM »Well, for location of stuff, I am just a road worker so I just measured from a couple known points for each end and made a quick dirty not to scale drawing to have and hold forever. Same with the sewer cleanouts, and D box. I would think some kind of metal roofing would well outlast the asphalt shingles. Biggest draw back is metal can be a bit slippery when wet if you have much of a slope to the roof. Sprinkler....have the plumber provide a stub out from the 1 inch minimum water service line for connection of irrigation. If on metered water service, request a 1 inch or larger meter for good flow to the home and fewer sprinkler stations. Depending on how far down the basement floor is, not sure conduit would be needed. Could be a lot of digging to get down to it. 1250
What are you building? / Re: Big Dave's honey do's; what Big Dave does when handling/not handling twins« on: February 13, 2018, 08:57:08 PM »How well will shingles hold up in your area? Would metal or tile roofing hold up better? You can even get metal in a tile look or even metal 3 tab look... Sprinklers, if using drip type for individual shrubs and trees, don't use the black plastic tubing as good old pvc has a much longer life. Have them install lots of conduit under the concrete flatwork for wiring and irrigation runs and mark/map the locations. I wish they would have used one size larger here at the winter place as I could only get 1/2" pipe through the conduit. |
