I have gotten word that it is actually a screw that goes in there. Likely going to just drop the tranny and check it all out.

Good luck fishing. What are you trying for?

Hey Brains

I have noted with my finely tuned and trained Aeroscout Mark 1 eyeballs

1. Aftermarket exhaust
2. Steering shaft repair with the good stuff
3. Some rust
4. Some other things...

I'd sell it quick
There's a comprehensive fluid change startin' here...

Luckily for me, I have a secret weapon protecting me from the notorious "comprehensive fluid change": a college student's budget coupled with a Duramax that is just itching to break something expensive.

I'll pop the tranny off, see what I can do, and if she's not worth the repair then I'll sell it off. If I can get it driving half decently, then maybe I'll keep it around just for the novelty of having a dirty W250 with 300,000 miles.

Awesome! A budget build and own! Fix the little things and drive it. Don't waste time with the big things like the rust, no need. If it runs strong who cares what it looks like!

Well, any of you looking for a 1st gen should really give posting an ad on your local outdoorsmen forum a try. I forgot to remove the wanted ad, and someone just gave me a call about how his 70 year old parents have a '92 D250 club cab long bed auto with around 150k miles that they are looking to finally get rid of. He said they upgraded to a 2007 Duramax and haven't barely used it in years, but last year the local Cummins dealer were having a deal on some tune up or something so he drove it into town and had that done. Tires are apparently good. He sent this picture, which he claimed was the worse side:

He figured they want in the area of $2k for it but wasn't sure. Huge shame it wasn't a reg cab, because then it'd be the perfect candidate for a body and motor swap. Swap on the body and 150k mile engine onto the W250 chassis, sell the 340k mile engine and part out the rest of the D250. I probably would have made money by the end.

Anyway, if he offers it to me for $2k, looks like I have to buy it purely out of principle.

OH, and I got another phone # of a guy who says his dad has a couple old Dodge diesels that he might be interested in selling. Will give him a call and see what he has.

Okay, I just got off the phone with a nice retired gentleman named Wayne who I have no idea what he does but said he has around 150 vehicles on his property apparently. He has a 1992 Dodge W250 12v/5 speed club cab with 2xx,xxx miles and no box, but supposedly ran and drove good last time he drove it (4 years ago...). He said just off the top of his head he was looking for $4200, which is probably a reasonable price if the cab isn't totally rotted out and it actually does run and drive good, but I'd still probably show up with $3500 cash and offer $3200 of it.

If I could pick that up in the $3500 range, I should mention that the farmer I bought this first W250 off of had some old '70s Dodge 2wd gas job with an 8' well built flat deck he said he'd sell to me for dirt cheap, but I'd have to take the whole truck. By dirt cheap, I assume he means probably something like $200, mainly because he said he would be stoked to just have the dang thing out of his yard. That flatdeck would in theory work great to replace the missing box on this one.

In the mean time, someone PLEASE freeze my bank funds so I stop buying old Dodge junk. If I keep this up, my backyard will become a 1st gen graveyard, and my dad already is annoyed with one giant heap of rust sitting back there already, I don't think he would appreciate me having more.

So what you're telling us is:  If I keep forgetting to remove my ad, in another 20 years some young punk will be writing on the inter web about some older gentleman he talked of on the phone that has 150 1st gen dodges sitting on his property in a variety of stages or restoration. But he can't show them during the day because his dad gets upset with people traipsing through the yard to look at the trucks.

Anyway, looks like some good finds it at least some good contacts for vehicles should you need them.

Let me explain what just happened to Ken

Somewhere 3 dozen posts back we were discussing the shifter missing a pin.

Then Ken took his afternoon siesta & dreamt about His long lost love H

He woke up in time for dinner

Then he recalled this thread & posted this below....

My question a little more detailed for the slow one (Shawn) "why would you pull the trans to install the missing pins?"

Its addictive

Can develop into an incurrable disease

Careful

You are showing all the signs

BTW, money, or the lack of it doesn't seem to affect this compulsion to buy old dodge/cummins stuff.

Get help, quick

Should be some group you can join like AA for old dodge truck owners, or something like that.

Haven't even touched the truck in two days because of poor weather and seductive women. Finally got around to it after work today, and when trying to do the simple fix of stabbing in a pin in place of the missing set screw, I can't seem to feel any connecting hole on the shifter when pushing a small, slender allen key that should not be any wider than the diameter of the hole where the shift screw goes into place. Couldn't feel anything when I slide a screw driver along the notch where the hole should be. I'm starting to think that the set screw got sheared in the middle and the outside piece fell out. I also noted that the set screw is still in place on the other side.

Looks like it will for sure need to be dropped so the driverside set screw and the theoretical sheared-off set screw can be removed. Maybe I'll get to that this weekend. Maybe.

EDIT: if I pop off the snap ring on the shifter, can a guy take the whole shifter out and look at it?

Just like that, as fast as it happened, it ended. Sold it today to a guy who is going to throw the drive train into a '55 Dodge pickup. Sold it for $2500, so I'm happy.

Now just waiting on buddy with the '92 D250 to give me the shakedown on pricing.
