battery charger wiring
« on: August 12, 2022, 04:49:34 PM »
so there is this pile of battery chargers at the farm (roughly 1500+) that all supposedly work, but all of them have the charger cables and the power cables cut off them.

So I fished 3 of them out of the pile and got them halfway cleaned up.  Now I need to figure out where to get new cords from so that I can get these things working.

Does anybody know where I can get new cables from, or a good way of fixing what is there? I would like something that has the rubber protector where they come through the back of the charger.

Why not modify a set of jumper cables with an insulated heat shrink cover? wire gage size has to be close, no?

The rubber protector is something added to the cable upon installation.

For power for the charge you can use a cord set from the hardware store or electrical supply store. For the charging wires, you need to use heavy enough wire to handle the max amps available to use. You should also be able to buy any type grommets you want from the supply place you get the wiring and clips from.

We used to rest 9 volt batteries by licking them. Might be worth a shot.

1500? Jeez

You won't be able to test amperage easily. Don't use your meter to try .
Just look for 15-18 volts coming out to know if it works.

Oh I read the original post wrong. I thought he had a pile of 1500 chargers.

But yes. Test the voltage across the leads.

You can get a dummy load to test batteries. It’s just a big resistor.

Yes ken you read that right.  Wendys dad has a huge pile of battery chargers that he got at some auction.

so if what i am reading is correct, nobody knows how to test a battery charger for BOTH voltage and amperage?

I told you what volts to see, and Tex showed you a cheap amp checker.

Only other way is to have an amp meter high enough to to measure max output of the charger, and a load just as high, basically shorting the leads together in a safe manner.... Like the tester Tex recommended.

Why do you care about amps? If it's making voltage there's a great chance it's working.

May not have been clear.  That battery tester becomes the resistor and load against which to test the charger.

Hook it up and it will show the voltage on the scale and then when you press the button it applies the load and the meter will tell you how well the charger is putting out amps.

Alternatively if you have a weak battery and the charger passes the voltage check hook it up and see how it charges.
You may need a DC clip on or some accurate way of measuring amps.
If avoid using a meter running the current through it on the off chance you cook the meter.
I just don't want to wind up missing a digit or limb.  I can sometimes get in a hurry to get results.
