Ok, so I ran across this today. The trail originally started about a 100 miles south of Yellowstone in Afton, WY so thinking of starting there and spend a week camping under stars with a group originating from RM while heading South towards CO. others are invited and I have sent out invites to a couple to join here and chime in if they like.

Baylee in her TJ, me in my JKU and potentially my wife in the 4Runner. Charles and Don have shown interest. Anyone is welcome from the forum to join us. Date is currently summer 2020 and we can figure out what works best. I’m tentatively out week of June 20th other than that wide open to what works best for group.

I will reach out to this outfit for more info on the route and any obstacles.

My jku is outfitted fairly well with recovery gear and have more experience in that area than I care to admit. I’d say if you had 33’s and a locked axle you should be fine but will confirm as we progress.

This sounds just great

I'd suggest we maintain a rigid state of flexibility in coming up with the route. Take in all the input, folks interests, then post up a tentative route/time and so forth, then from there set it up and post it as the first Real-Man (Not wanting to sound sexist here) TAT ride

Don, what is your tentative timeline? Say we all meet up in Afton, Wy? With that stated if you’re coming from South or East we could start at my shop in Dacono, CO prior to heading to WY. I have a secured facility with showers and restrooms anyone could use to camp the night before heading to WY if you wanted or there are plenty of Hotels local as well if you wanted a break before hitting the trail for a few days.

We could even start the trail in Colorado and head North if that works better?

How long you thinking of going? A week?
Do they have camping sites or is it a free for all?

I'm very flexible

I was launching in late May, but with the Chinaman flu and finishing the camper I don't know for sure. I could just dash out somewhere, then go from there. I had planned going northwest toward rushmore then to jellystone, then over to near Pinedale. All of that is north of you, so a route change may be in order. I can do that too

From the website they claim to have links to places to camp and friendly folks along way. Also gas stations, hotels, service shops etc.

A week or so I’d guess.

No, only a few weeks. Oldest wants to get in some work time before his senior year. Momma is now without a job so she is flexible.
I just looked at Afton. Seems like a good place to start, but for me, I think I'd just start from your shop.

So maybe first week of June?

Maybe it would be smarter to start at shop and head North? Thinking if people are traveling in at least we would have a shop with access in case an mechanical issues need addressed?

Possibly toward Saturday, what the 5th-6th

That should give us enough time

Or the following week to be safe. Let me run all this by HH6 before I commit

I could definitely take my bike on the trail.  Lots of the enduro or cross bikes like dons old Kawasaki he had ride that trail.  Afraid it might get a little slow with jeeps, school buses and so forth.   Ill be happy to meet up for Moab lol

there will be several posts from me.  they are posts moved from the original thread on this topic.  Sorry for the inconvenience as they will not be in sequential order.... :knucklehead:

OK, so I stumbled across this today and I'm stoked. With all the wutang flu crap and social distancing I'm already looking for things that we may be able to do this summer. The trail starts 100 miles south of Yellowstone in Afton, WY and is a combination of public roads and back country roads with pavement and w/o. It does not cross private land or locked gates.

Any interest? Don? Might make a great addition to the west trip with the boys? Baylee in her tj and I'm in with the JKU. May be able to entice the wife in her 4runner (it would need some quick upgrades though). Thinking this summer, no set dates yet.

You put a locker in the rear right? Grizzly? Get it so you could toss a removable winch on the front and let’s go!  :likebutton:

Yup grizzly locker rear.

unless a long wheel base vehicle is a huge issue I’d think you’ll be just fine.

More right foot and the winch you’d be fine. I have quite a bit of recovery gear FYI.....

Think I’m going to message him and get some info on the trail start from WY and any additional limitations etc on vehicles though.

How long is this trail?

So when are you thinking of doing this S?

I am working like crazy (although not today!) to get myself road ready

You're right a meet up and ride like that would be epic!

I'm very interested...

Just found the web site.     cool me thinks I need a KTM and some saddlebags.

My thought was to start south of Yellowstone and head south back to CO, however it could be done other ways obviously but I was thinking like a week of driving and camping under the stars.

I’m open, currently we’re scheduled for 4 days in Glennwood Springs in June week of 21st but beyond that (which may not happen because of hotel / wutang) I’m open to everyone’s schedule.

You can ride with me!

So, Shawn, I just created a whole new section, Adventure!

Guess who owns it?

Put this together in there. You take lead, don't screw it up!

;-)

I could catch the trail in the panhandle of a Texas and work my way up to Shawn. I did see on the site there were a bunch of rovers so I’m guessing my LB7 would be fine but I’d love to get a KTM    do do this

Thank Nate, I think.....

So I sent an email out last night asking a few questions, after further review it looks as if roll maps only work from North to South through WY.

However, he can provide tracks for a gps enabled device. I have an iPhone with GAIA gps app loaded on it. Used it a little but sure there may be other who are more familiar. If anyone has suggestions feel free to post up. I’d like the roll maps preferably but do t think they’ll work. My jku is setup with a holder for this phone/ if it works I may get a mount to use an iPad in the Jeep.

Another thought would be to to travel to Afton and we could travel back south to Colorado or head SW towards ID even. I’m open to suggestions.

That sounds great, T!

Warning order to all:

Looking at this through the COVID-19 lens. Most states will be peaking in May with infections. There will undoubtedly be a lot of turbulence to our once stable national "system"
No telling if states will even be open as it were or parks or hotels or restaurants, or???

I'd say we maintain a rigid state of flexibility with the start date of this as it remains uncertain what the condition will be at the projected time.

Plus they aren’t responding to me with info. I don’t like buying stuff from people who won’t respond timely...... going to keep trying though to at least have the info when we need it.

They sent me the file, it’s in my email so at least they are quick to process orders

As far as this summer you’re asking wrong guy, we just cancelled our summer family trip reservations and got a refund today. I know everything you see on tv is BS, watch some of the home videos coming out of NY. It’s like a war zone......

Ok, so like I stated I’m no gps guru. I was able to save the tracks file into my iPhone and then using Gaia I imported it to the app. Took about 5 mins to figure that much out. Going to play with Gaia over the next few days.

Spoke to the boss man recently about this via text. We both want to make this happen yet this year but it may be a later summer adventure w/ covid-19 implications. We are also discussing a yearly run. I think it would be a lot of fun to try and tackle the western legs of this a week at a time.

Maybe you could drop that file on here for group members to download.

What was the cost? I'd be happy to share in that expense

Maybe you could drop that file on here for group members to download.

What was the cost? I'd be happy to share in that expense

It’s cheap, like $8 cheap so not worried about cost. As stated before though Sam took time to create these files. Trying to protect his intellectual property to some degree. If a member is planning to go with us I have no problem sharing it with that individual however I do not feel comfortable posting it up here open to the public.

I do think we are going to try to make it so we can also use the trip to take care of some of our stuff that was just tossed in the storage with the truck.

So cool!

Looking at the development of this thing, both the COVID19 infection and the coming financial meltdown, I see things folding out like this: I think we are going to have to balance placing people my age at risk vs the health of our nation. I for one say, do not take a chance with our economy, make things right for the younger generations. Heck we older folks have had our good lives, and although would like to enjoy a longer one, do not kill my nation to give me a few more years!

Now I hope mosty people 65 and older (I am 65) feel the same way. We are going to have to get vocal about it and get this nation back to work. I see some decisions being made which will send folks back to work soon, within a month or sooner, or, heck, there won't be any work to return to. So it that all happens we should be getting back to the new normal in June at the earliest. So we would likely be GTG for a J month outing if I had to be a betting man. Our KY kids go back to school in late August so I couldn't leave any later than around the last of July to have a meaningful trip.

So those are my predictions/thoughts/time restrictions.

I'd suggest others add their opinions/limitations to the discussion so we can come up with a one size fits all solution.

So current info is telling us 26 states are opening back up the end of this month or first of next. https://www.the-sun.com/news/694291/trump-29-states-verge-reopening-some-tomorrow/amp/

So I would think give us a month to see how that pans out and if the wutang flu spikes back up. If it does this whole trip maybe scuttled for this year.

If things keep moving horizontal we are shooting for a week of June 14th launch into WY for a solid 7 days.

So the next question is who of you are wanting to attend? Just curious more than anything.

I’m debating.  Can you advise entry point and terminus?  Gotta figure logistics on getting that far from the Deep South

Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

Charles, here is a screen shot of GAIA and the tracks. My shop is located at 151 MT Elbert Ave, Dacono CO 80514 which is a gated facility with plenty of parking and access to shower / restroom facilities, rv dump station and water.

Kind of using it as a launch location so maybe meet night before and make sure everyone is squared away. Any supplies that may need topped off should be able to be acquired local as well or in case you forgot something we have Walmart, cabelas, rei, hd etc all within 15 mins of the shop.

The map and colored sections I believe are day drives each. The far NE point I believe is New Castle, WY which is 5-6 hours from shop.

So it would depend on how everyone would want to do this. Driving there and then running a leg would make for a long day. If we make it 7 days of trail that might put us over in Duanes stomping grounds assuming we can impose or he’s in the area?

Again, this is currently an open book and a make it up as we go as none of us have any experience with this trail. I do have a friend in Douglas who may join who may know the area better.

Interesting drive. Starts in the plains of the east ends in the pines of the west. Appears to travel near elk mountain and the red desert in the south.
