This will be a slow thread about transforming a 40+ acre heavily wooded property into my wife's and mine summer retreat.
The older we get the hotter it feels in southern Arizona. My wife basically wanted a pool, or somewhere cool. I only liked one of those options.
Arizona, our state, does have some beautiful, northern, high elevation areas, but the nicest areas are still fairly warm in the summer, and pretty expensive for acreage, and also dry.
My dream, like many others, was to head to Alaska, but I knew that would probably never happen. The wife has been retreating to her sister's place in northern Idaho for the last couple years and kept telling me how nice it was, and "there's water everywhere ". ..kinda like Alaska, but half as far.

Shawn, when we walked it last July, the mosquitoes were bad. Her sister said is was worse than normal. The grass and other ground cover was like a foot tall everywhere, that's why I took the brush hog. Waste of time because it's only a couple inches tall right now, and very few bugs. Did find a tick yesterday tho. Yuck
Dave, property is about 2500'. Well next door is 240' @25 gallons/min.
SIL hit an artesian a 1/3 mile away tho. They had to build a pond to relieve the excess pressure.
Easement to the uphill driveway is about 1/4 mile..maybe a little more .

Finished the gate today, at the southern property line.
So, we put down 2" shale on the length of the easement, and 2-6" (actually a bunch of large stuff mixed in..like up to 16" in size) on the semi steep driveway after scraping off most of the mud.
Then started hauling 3/4 minus today...5 more loads and still hauling after we left. Sidenote...not used to daylight from 4am to 9 PM. Difficult to sleep in after having a drink or 2.
Felled a dead fir leaning over the road. First "real" tree I've ever cut. Still only about a 20" base.
Might get rid of the yellow sign. It was a last minute purchase but doesn't fit the situation. Beautiful area Ken, some nice trout in the lake, not the lake trout they taste not so good, the rainbow are very good. Nice job on the road, only problem I saw was the lower right photo in the last post. That easement road, how many properties does it serve and is there a road maintenance agreement in place where the cost of maintenance is shared by all?

That mud in the last photo? There's 12" of large rock next to it...just didn't smooth the side out.
4 properties can potentially use that easement, but only one past my property and doesn't plan on building.

Thought I posted this, but bought a small shed from the place I got the skid steer..6×8. Just big enough to leave some tools, chainsaw and excavator attachments. Stuck it on an old skidder trail and raised it to let water run under it.

I stuck a cell camera next to the shed and pointed it at the driveway and clearing, then mounted one on the mini x brush guard. ..hope it keeps people honest, and there was also a deer kill in the clearing, so hope to catch some action out there. I'd suggest you get with Duane. He purchased a lot to build on up there near pinedale, and is looking at yet another. But he "knows" where there are many spots that are not necessarily all that accessible in the shadow of the tetons. I'm going to check some spots out in June when i venture out that way.

Of all places in Wyoming, Jackson hole and surrounding area is the odd duck out (shadow of the Tetons). Think californians trying to ruin life for everyone... yea it’s kind of like that. Sure is beautiful though, and expensive.

Now we're running power up the side of the mountain for my new neighbor. We'll have a transformer at my southern gate on the easement, the one we did last year.
The neighbor is paying for the job, but I'm donating labor to lower the cost.
It's 1600ish feet from a pole at the bottom, up some pretty steep terrain, to my gate. Jeremy, the guy hired to do the job, already cleared the trees and did the 600 foot section from my gate up to the neighbors build site.
We started by crossing the easement and heading dowhill today. 42", bedded 6" below and above but they're cutting us slack on that if we clean the ditch good.
JR, it's not granite but I've hit 36" of solid shale several times and the rest is glacial till... like 1 to 4 foot boulders almost every few feet.

That hoe should handle all that fine. This flipping granite is meshed together like a puzzle, you have to find the right rock to break it loose.
Think I have to do 36 here for power, 60 if residential. Neighbor just cut 9ft for his septic, that is crazy deep at 2ft wide. Hopefully I don't have the same rock layer he does.
Why does that bumper being custom not surprise me.

Probably not that large then. Sounds like they are laying 13kv lines to the transformer. Not a lot of amperage at that voltage. Interesting that it is underground. Here they would put up poles, but I guess ice and snow would make that unrealiable

Charles, Indiana was above ground 70% of time. Here in Colorado (front range) 80% is underground and we rarely ever lose electrical service unlike Indiana

Here overhead isn't allowed for new construction. That's what made it so difficult is finding a way up the hill. The previous person in charge at the power company said it would be a hundred grand . The new guy is cool...he let us go up the property line.
It's a 30 foot easement, 15 each side, but he said we only needed to clear what was necessary. That allowed us to save some larger trees by zig zagging.

The Diesel creek guy has some great info on dozers. Mainly the undercarriage and blade. Looks like that's a 6 way blade (great) and komatsu are solid.
Drop it at my place, I service it!! Just 8k, we can tow that!

It does have the 6 way blade. Push blades are on the outside of the tracts.

I didn't pull the trigger because of the distance. Need to think about it. Might be cheaper to just get a decent one up there, to begin with.
Left some more tools, including some fishing gear. Had to throw in some shelving to organize.

You're right, but I only have so many days to accomplish these projects and still have a day of rest. It will be planned different next time tho.
JR, store bought, last time we were there. The place that I rented the skid steer from had sheds for sale, delivered.

Not sure about going that way yet. Free is tuff to beat plus a little work and tin, but so is time. May put that $$ into an awning to park under now, then next to the shop when I don't want to park inside.

So, I didn't get the dozer, although I did buy a trailer that would haul it. By the time I decided to go for it, he traded it to someone else.
..then I found a local one last week. Same dozer, but hydrostatic, and very nice. I called on it exactly 1 day after someone bought it. Oh well. A skid steer would be more useful, but they're stupid expensive, and not great on steep slopes.
This year's trip is coming up so it's time to organize. I'm going to start off by expanding the meadow, making a pad and roof for my trailer, and at the same time figure out where the future cabin will reside without having to cut out too much mountain to make it work.

Started the IAP (Idaho awning project) today. It's going to use a full bundle of 4x4s, 32 feet long. This will be used to cover my 5th wheel and at least the mini excavator....60' long and 15' wide.
The idea is to make it screw together once I'm up there. I bought some 5/16" self tappers to make that happen.
First up was cutting 7 tubes in half to get 14 posts. 3-4 feet in the ground will make them 12-13 tall. Then made a bunch of plates to weld on. All the bare steel gets coated with zinc from a spray can.

Well, if you consider "it crossed my mind" as a calculation then I would say yes. Lol
It will be braced once I determine the material. .. trying to keep it somewhat light.
We're just trying to get the 5th wheel setup so:
#1 is snow protection (even though there was less than a foot this year)
#2= drill a well (neighbor just paid 30k)
#3= septic
#4= power (not crucial at this time)
#5= pay off property
#6= win lottery to build nice cabin
#6a= wake up from utopian dream, sell
shop and build cabin myself with all the newfound free time.
#6z= wake up from 2nd dream and put log siding on the trailer.

Been drilling holes and welding almost all day. Didn't feel like working on cars, but cars would've been less tiring.

Maybe if I thought about it ahead of time, and wanted to wait.
I used the plasma on all the saddles for the header tubes. Each plate has 5 holes...2 plates per upright X 14 =140 holes and it took about 20 minutes. Just thought the rafter mounts should be more precise.

I’ve had and operated several different punch presses. They’re ok, I wouldn’t buy another.

Got the purlins and roofing yesterday for the Idaho project.
Spent today cutting, notching, and drilling bolt holes, sticking to the plan of bolting/screwing this RV shed together instead of welding it. Not sure if I'm saving myself any work going this route, but hindsight is what it is.
Now to figure out how to get it on the gooseneck considering I had planned on using 18, Z-purlins, which would stack really well, but ended up with 24, 8" C-purlins, which take up about 10 times the space.(and they're flippin heavy for one guy to move around!)

I’ve seen that movie. Wait until you have to lift those purlins in place. First time I did it I walked one end of a 30 footer up a ladder and placed in the C channel and then put the ladder at the other end and walked it up the ladder. Last time I used the tractor.
I’m a little concerned about your notches on the ends and what that is doing to the structural integrity.

The notch allows them to overlap 4", the width of the rafters. I didn't want to butt them together without welding.
Once in place, I'll drive in 4 or more 5/16" screws on the flat side to take more load.

There's 7 rafters, 10 feet apart, for a total of 60 feet. (4x4 galvanized).
There will be 4 rolls of purlins on each side, horizontal, with 4ish foot spacing from peak to eaves. (The panels are 12' long).
3-21' purlins end to end make a roll....24 total.
So, the inner ends of the outer purlins will be recessed into the center purlins, instead of end to end.
Make sense?

Use bolts. They will pull tighter and spread the load better with washers.
The end cuts should not affect strength on the length. Cuts in the span will hurt more.

It looks heavy and a good job with all the supports. Ladders, forks, totes and even some building parts!
Be sure to check the straps are specked for the load. There are some DOT guys out there who really looks for the little things.
Maybe get it weighed so you know your not over 26k if you get stopped and know the overhang laws. Normally under 4ft=no flag.
Not being picky but a clean trip is way better!

Had 4 loads of rock hauled in just so we could stay out of the mud. The truck couldn't make it all the way to the pad so we had to move it with the kabota...first layer was large, like 4-20" rock (they called it 2-6"), then a layer of 2 inch (actual) and then 3/4".

The peaks of the rafters are 16'+ tall .....mini x reaches 12.5 feet. Just high enough to put the headers on, like barely. There's no crains nearby, so....

Decided to stop at the 40' mark (length of trailer) after it started raining again yesterday. Supposed to head home tomorrow but going to stay another day.
Had to buy another ladder today to use as scaffolding because nothing else was working, trying to get the panels in place. It still sucks, but is what it is without a source for scaffolding nor man lifts anywhere close.... not to mention flat ground.
Oh, and it's a real bad time to buy 2x10s, as if no one knows. $200 for 3 sticks at 16'.

The reason I'm revisiting this thread is because of a new project.
I've been looking for a used tracked skid steer but they're hard to get right now. Some that would normally go for sub $20k are 35-40k.
Came across a semi worn out dozer so I went that route. It's a Deere 350C. I'll be able to haul it on the gooseneck, weighing only 11,000 lbs.
The choice was made because of the amount of meadow/tree clearing and trail making I'll need to do eventually, and if I need a skid steer they can be rented locally. Dozers can't.
My plan is similar to Don's. If I decide to quit working on cars, I'll start doing something enjoyable again. Having a small dozer and mini x should net a decent income in the area. We'll see.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220211/ff92b8f6991106db91bb192f79f66d0a.jpg)

So, started taking it apart this week.
I wanted the blade out of the way so I had to figure that out. The manual said to just "remove the blade". Turns out it has to be rotated 90 degrees to remove.
After that I removed the radiator, then spent several hours digging out grease from everywhere (several leaks....oil cooler, crank seal, hydro pump, etc) then steam cleaned it.
...filled up a tub just from the junk built up in the belly pan!

Basically it's a clutch like disc, suspended by 5 large springs that absorbs the pulses from the diesel, saving the transmission (the disc hooks straight to the input shaft...the clutch is in the transmission). They are notorious for breaking springs, pins, and/or stripping splines causing engine lockup.

Machinery is sky high. My Kobelco that I paid $23K for then with repairs maybe $1500 more. I am telling people now that it is not for sale in the low 30's
Old machines = simple and they still do great work. Witness my old Case 1150B (Sarge) IT was a dirt digging machine. Pushed over trees like nothing. It did twice the work as my 100HP Kubota right about half as fast
Kub wins out because it has AC!
But a 500+ cu in diesel makes a sound that is addicting.
Ken, tell you what. I now plan to just buy a new CTL every two years. When it comes time to trade this new one in, I'll sell it to you for the trade in price...

That's what happens when you buy 2000 miles away.
I basically bought a freshly painted antique at a premium. It wasn't falling apart, but not up to Dave standards either.
Actually that's not quite true. The alternator was falling off, the water pump is bad, and the main crossbar that holds the track assemblies on lost 1/4" of steel to rust, and I haven't figured out what to do about it yet.
Oh, and it smokes blue under load.
...and the fuel tank looks pretty bad.
But hey, at least they changed the hydraulic and possibly the transmission oils!

The knock was the isolator, just how it's designed I guess. It does have some wear in the splines but should last the rest of my life.
Since I didn't have to spend 2 grand on the isolator, I decided to build the engine. She had blow-by and blue smoke under load. Looks like someone did it recently, but probably didn't cap the exhaust and rain rusted the cylinders.
Just noticed that I have only mentioned the bad stuff so far.
The good parts are the undercarriage.
Someone has changed all of it at some point.... chains, pads, rollers, and sprockets. They are at 90-95%.
Yesterday I straightened the skid tray.

That's what I was running into. There's plenty of these out there from 2k-15k but you can easily spend $10k on the undercarriage alone.
What year D4 were you looking at?
The old ones weigh close to a JD350 but I think in the 80s they weigh about double.

Naw. The kits come with sleeves so I had to knock it out to see what o-ring set up it had. There's 2 styles, o-rings in the block or on the sleeves. Neither one is a press fit. They just pop out.

I remember helping (can’t say doing as I was 12) doing a JD 4630.
It was press fit. Had the danged thing off the ground before a couple sleeves popped.
We did it in the tractor on the farm.
So a bit redneck it was. Lol.

I've been researching the crossbar issue in some old posts on some crawler forums.
Let me back up and explain. The entire track assemblies are held on by 2 crossbars. The rear one is a large round bar. The tracks could pivot on these, in theory.
The front one is basically a large cross member, bolts to the frame, transmission, and sticks out supporting the tracks. It uses 4, 5/8" bolts on top, and 2, 3/4" bolts on the inside....per track. These bolts have shouldered bushings and oversized holes to allow some movement. Terrible design. The steel actually rusts and wears away over time.
The fix is to just put new bolts and washers to bolt it down firmly, and or weld it all together.

The hard to reach bolts, that normally require a 15/16 wrench, were rusted down to about half that.
After burning countless pounds of mig wire, and air hammering til I was deaf, the bolts were removed.....on one side of the machine.

Ken, you know I buy ear plugs with the little string attached to them in bulk. Pretty cheap compared to hearing aids. In your case you’d get added benefit of not having to hear as much from H, come to think of it maybe why you chose not to wear hearing protection in first place…..

The holes have a slight recess at the top. I ground washers to fit (each one was different) then added more washers above them to try and keep tension on the bolts. I was going to fab inserts to fill the holes, and plates to shim up the crossbar, to replace the missing metal, but decided it would be way too much unnecessary work.

I also assume that there's going to be a bunch of flexing going on down there, especially since I couldn't get the mating surfaces flat. The 5s should be more forgiving, at least in my mind.

It's amazing that they don't put grease zerks on some of the pins but they do on others. I've seen that on some Deere backhoes also.

It is the same with all new equipment. My Kenworth has 1/4 the amount of zerks my old truck had. Disk brakes eliminate some but there is nothing to grease in the driveline either. It used to take half an hour to grease the combine every morning. Now it takes 5 minutes.

That is the one place I hate to grease is drivelines!!! My Mack has four joints I think.. crawling under there and fighting our shop floor drain, and not being able to roll under the axle!!!

Made some bushings for the dozer frame. The pushing forces from the blade end up at these 2 points. The bushings are almost 1/8" thick and have a 1/4" flange. That's as wide as I could fit. A bunch of freehand grinding to make them fit, then welded in.

#1- cheapest line boring tool is from China. $2000+ $1500 shipping.
#2- absolutely no room for such a set-up.
#3-Pulling out subframe is not a small task. Would have to remove transmissions and track assemblies to use a boring tool... that I don't have.

So I'll give you guys something else to critique. Replacement pins for the dozer frame are $167 each... that's $334 for 2.
Factory pins (and bushings I found out) are hardened.
1-1/2" hitch pins from the local store are $30 each. You guessed it, $60 for 2!
The dirt is very soft at our place in Idaho. Soft dirt, soft pins. Perfect!
First I had to cut to length, then make square flanges. The pins aren't meant to turn, nor do they have grease points. I may change that.
I don't think I could wear these pins and bushings out in my lifetime, especially for how often it will be used, and the type of use. Just my thinking, but end bore the pin (he end that protrudes that you can get to, then cross drill the pin in the center of the bushing/load area, screw a zerk into the open end and grease it every day

Yeah some goo hardened rod would do the trick and not crazy $$. I would not drill the pins, but the housing. Pins are out anyway right?

Started putting the engine back together. Found out the rod to piston pin bushings are way out of spec so I'm having the machine shop install and hone out some new ones.
Also made a patch for the rusted out muffler (new one is $400).

Muffler patched up.
Fixed a hole in the radiator. Painstakingly straightened all the fins.
Then straightened the fan blade previously destroyed from the alternator bracket that came loose, and the beat up shroud. Rattle can. On to replace all 10 hydraulic hoses. I don't trust the local shops and decided to hit up "DiscountHydraulicHose.com" for a second time. I had factory specs from the service manual, which really helped because over the years someone has changed them, some of which were too long.
You pic the style of hose, length, and fitting size. You can type out custom labels for .50 each which makes it handy...lift cylinder #1, tilt #2, etc.
I opted to install protective sleeving myself.
All 10 hoses (2 wire, 4800psi) was $360+ tax. Very reasonable.

...that was the passenger side consisting of 6 hoses.
The lift cylinder on the left side was leaking so I got a seal kit. No biggie, just repack it and move on, right?
Yeah, no.
I guess the Deere engineers from today were trained by the previous generations. So there's a jamb nut, like most rebuildable cylinders. Typically the rod guide (or cylinder head) is threaded into the cylinder. Not on this one.
It pushes in. Matter of fact, it can be pushed to the bottom of the cylinder.
There's a snap ring that keeps it from coming out. There's a large void that can hold approximately 1-2 tablespoons of water where the snap ring resides....it was so rusted I couldn't tell what was what.
There's no direct replacement that I could find.
After 2 days of chiseling, hammering, picking and needle scaling, I found the ring.
You have to drive the head down into the cylinder to remove the snap ring.
I did.... but it wasn't pretty. Now it's not just stuck, it's stuck covering up the fluid port. It's amazing how much air can be compressed...
So, I tied the rod to a forklift with a chain hoist and pumped air into the open port. Nada.
So I beat the living **** out of the cylinder, and to my surprise, it basically exploded across the shop, bouncing off of the forklift, anvil, and 4 small children.

Everything from the bell housing back is bolted solid to the frame. .. no rubber.
The hydro pump and radiator also hang off the front of the engine.

Found the bearings out in the alternator. I'm not sure how I missed that on disassembly but whatever.
There's only a couple options out there and they start at $250.
Was able to find the bearings locally and Napa had one set of brushes in Arizona, and I bought them.
After that sidestep I finished the install.
She runs pretty good, so far...and no leaks yet.
Next up, reseal the hydraulic pump and install in the front of the motor.

JR, pretty cool with John Deere parts. Punch the part number in to most catalogue interchanges and something pops up. My parts supplier had the bearings on the shelf.
Now, for everything else, most parts are all gone, used or new. I bought the last Napa fuel filter nationwide, then bought the last Wix version off rock auto 5 minutes ago. Plenty of oil and air filters but no hydraulic filters except straight from Baldwin... just ordered 2.
Yesterday my order was entirely refunded from a tractor supply company on the web that said they had everything, but ended up having nothing at all.

Today I finished the hydraulic hoses and cylinder, filled and tested the system, and believe it or not nothing has started leaking yet. (I don't believe it because it's rare to get 100% the first time on larger jobs).
Also installed the radiator housing (not fun by myself) and the side panels.
The hood will be last after some updated lights .
Oh, and peeled off the dealer stickers and put stars in their place. If I were them, I wouldn't claim this one came through their shop. It's not a bad machine but they should've done better for the price. Changed the reverser, transmission, and final drive fluids. Good thing since they had water in the bottom. Painted the skid plate, straightened the mounts, and installed.
Welded up the dozer blade pivot point. It was missing a 1/2" of material.

The cylinder hooks to the left side.

I just put the old one in for comparison (passenger side). I guess they're the same size as landscape lights....4.5" diameter.

I really didn't want to have to clean this heavy *** fuel tank. Oh well.
There was 2 inches of sludge in the bottom. It has a sump with a 1" drain hole. I took the fitting out and zero diesel came out, until I stuck a screwdriver in it, then, well, you know what happened. ..15 gallons happened.
Started with a pressure washer. Then soaked with carb dip, drove around the yard with it strapped to a forklift, then rotated every hour. Pressure washed again, then dried out with alcohol.
Tomorrow we use muriatic acid for the heavy rust.

I carefully finished the tank with acid, followed by the pressure washer, then alcohol, then a couple quarts of transmission fluid mixed with diesel to slow the flash rust, all the while rotating it by hand, using moving blankets to protect the paint. Worked great... during the 2 day project.
Then I went to carry it back to the dozer, with the forklift, and it abruptly fell off, chipping the good side in several places. DurDdurr

Watching these guys clean tank by strapping them to a wheel and driving around. I may try that at the ridge with my 75gal storage, might even get a 250gal for red when prices come down! Offered one for free.

How in the world would you strap a 75 gallon tank to a wheel? Like a tractor tire maybe? If you do that you better get a good video.

Some form of agitation with steel shot and a solvent would probably work well.

Seen that very thing on YT several times. Put a wad of media in there (1/4 nuts or such) and strap to a tractor tire.

I turned a conex into a paint booth, albeit one without ventilation, lighting, or filtration, but it's been super windy this year and that's the only place I have to get away from it.

So, certain parts are really hard to find for this thing. I did not know this before aquiring it.
I think I mentioned the fuel filters.
Next is the air filter. They are not available, period. I found 2 new/old stock on ebay and am currently waiting for them.
I have ordered hydraulic filters from 3 companies and 2 gave me my money back. Still waiting for confirmation on the 3rd place.
While searching for different parts I found some dozer blades and went ahead and purchased them, so that was the job for today.
After removing the old ones (not fun), I found a bunch of rust (mounting surface no longer flat) and a couple large cracks. Also found some asphalt. A small explosion went off while using a rosebud to straighten the edge, from trapped gasses in the core of the blade. Fun times

... and finally received the tachometer from India. I actually bought a whole set from them, for $38.00. That was for a mechanical tach, oil and temp gauges, and a fuel gauge and voltmeter. Actually thought about taking the Stewart Warners out and putting these in because of how nice they look, and similar to factory.
Only issue I found on the tach was how they spelled "Idling".
While I was there I found some 1 inch heat shrink and put it on the turning brake levers.
Then a final wash. I'd say it's pretty even, and turned around would tow better with weight shifted rearward. It definitely would be easier to pull it straight in.
..but I'd run the blade through the side panels trying to keep it straight, especially when it breaks over.

For a long tow I would turn it around. The real weight is ahead of the axles. Guy who taught me for hauling stuff in our smaller trucks is if the rear only squats about an inch, you are GTG.

I can't load it that way. The blade barely fits... I'd have to have it perfectly centered when it breaks over, plus the engine and blade with it's frame are pretty darn heavy.
Doesn't matter really. I'll be using the gooser for the Idaho trip.
