Excursion build
« on: August 09, 2019, 11:15:29 AM »
Well I started with a stock 05 excursion with sagging leaf springs and multiple oil leaks, broken injectors etc.

Now I’ve since studded it, new injectors, all new moog steering system, new gear box, new glow plugs, glow plug harnesses, injector harness, new oil cooler, no egr cooler or valve, ficm flashed, sct tunes, 4” downpipe and full exhaust, bds 8” lift, all fluids flushed, new calipers and brakes all around, steel braided lines, sulastic shackles front and rear, led headlights and dogs, updated mirrors, deep cleaned the inside, worked the exterior some, fresh undercoating, metal driver side cooler pipe vs the factory plastic, 40” maxxis m/t, ceramic tint, back up lights under the body, afe intake with sock, etc.

Next projects are: coil spring front end, cb/ham setup install(already have it from the Jeep build), full new a/c, fan clutch(probably doing this weekend), new radio with front and rear cameras, install the winch.

Man, that's a bunch of mods for the first post

You haven't started this build, you are well into it

Be cool to watch it develop!

Still feels like a ton of work is to be done. I’ve sourced a few coil spring axle assembly’s, now I just need to in burry the trailer and go get one.

Oh also I put the Odawgs s3R intake manifold on it, new ipr,  and new misc sensors.

So far great!  I ran them on my wrangler also and sold a set to a guy with a f350 and he loves them.

Today was rebuilding the a/c system completely: new lines, condenser, compressor, blower, office tube, and expansion valve.  Also, I decided to upgrade the trans cooler.

What was wrong with it that caused you to rebuild the whole thing?

Compressor was weak, condenser was partly clogged, blower was weak, fan wasn’t coming on for the a/c properly

Well I ended up replacing the aux condenser as the expansion valve was seized to it.  Pressures look good, I will check it again tomorrow probably just to verify. Note to self the main blower fan spins the opposite way as the aux fan, not sure how some manufacturers say they are the same.

i sure hope so. at least until i get the duramax running! hah

but really.. it’s been a solid truck. i to do HPOP a couple months back. but nothing else major. what i would consider minor to medium diesel maintenance. which is way more than a gas truck, but everyone knows that lol

I had no issues, just wanted to stud it, new injectors, updated rockers, branch tubes and adaptors, blue spring kit, new oil cooler, odawgs intake, full egr cooler delete, up pipes, 4”dp, new seals and gaskets almost everywhere, new ipr, misc new sensors, injector harness, tensioner, belt, fan clutch, etc  the list goes on

Today I put a aux fan for the condenser, wired up a relay and fuse utilizing the factory up fitter switch wiring, I’ll take a picture tomorrow and post it up

On order is sinister coolant degas bottle, battery terminals and wires to beef up the battery/charging system wiring and correct some worn out crappy factory ones.

I’m blessed to be able to do all myself as 25k is crazy, maybe I’ll advertise, a few studding jobs and I can buy a new zr1 cash

Little work today-  new coolant tank as the factory was cracked on the bottom and leaking, and fixed a ps leak.

We don't have enough information on the powerstroke thing.

I owned one of the first, a 1994 plain jane XL 7.3 P.S. with a 5 speed and a 4.10 gear. It was a great truck, but would have benefited from modern upgrades.

With the Excursion having been produced with a PS engine, it should show up more on the pages of this forum.

I know those things are getting stupid expensive and equal to the cost of putting a D-Max into a Burb, but, still, I'd like to see more from the P.S. community posted up here.

Definitely, now a durabird build would be nice.  For what I grabbed this excursion for and what I have in it though I couldn’t touch a durabird, although most can’t do everything no labor cost.

I worked on a fleet of 300ish 6.0’s and 7.3 ps’s and then 6.4’s for 7 years and swore I would never own one.  But with all the newer diesels and when you consider what’s needed to make one solid it is not bad considering.

So I had a good experience with my 1994 7.2

However over in Afghanistan we had 10 or more of the 6.0's. They were horrible. Only a couple made it through the first year. Only one was legitimate (IED). The transmission failed on one. The turbo went out on two I think. The rest suffered from some mysterious condition from dust getting into sensitive electronics and rendering them undriveable.

We hired some ford diesel mechanic who got one excursion running, one F250, and the two 4X4 P.S. vans we used to haul folks around in.

My opinion of the PS after years of not having vehicles because the Armee didn't think to plan for replacements, I swore the things off. Interestingly though the Suburbans we used in Iraq with the 8.1 were unstoppable, almost. Most were shot up, I watched one get hit by an RPG in the back end and then I watched this flaming burb drive off about a mile before the guys had to jump ship. A rocket hit the parking lot one day at lunch and took out a bunch of them as they kept cooking off and blowing up the one next door.

But other than that, they were tanks. And meet a BMW on a narrow street...Well, Germany would not fare well to put it mildly!

Well over the last week I put a front and rear camera, new radio and speakers.  Yesterday and today I spent some time and detailed it up some.

Side note, I found a front axle to do the coil spring conversion.  I’ll probably pick it up in the next few days.

Will do. It’s through a KENWOOD double din radio, went with rydeen cameras, I’ll take pictures in the daylight.  They are wired to ignition power and then the reverse one has a reverse trigger as well, so I can view them anytime as well as the reverse one comes in when put into reverse.

That reminds me I have a tailgate bezel and camera for my LB7, but have yet to install it.  I guess I find it a badge of honor to be able to back up to within 1 ft of the object and not hit it.

That, and I’d have to completely redo the audio system since its all factory 1-1/2 din

I love the ne dnx996xr!  Well worth it.   Backing wasn’t the issue, running over objects is so now I’m covered
