Tires, Wheels, and Suspension / Re: Mud tire thread
« on: October 20, 2015, 04:07:29 PM »
We have Costco out here, in fact they put one in back in Indiana a year before we left and I liked it mo' better than Sam's. They usually have a good tire sale around Nov ish. Put bridgestones on wifes car a year go and essentially bought 3 and received one free.

OK, back to MT's will take a look at Toyo's and see what they will run me for a set.

Thanks Tate for the input. If you sold tires, I value your opinion. My operation is pretty small, so not a good sampling.

I'm thinking of getting out from under these Grapplers...they're starting to drive me nuts (and I'm half deaf!).
Toyo M/T it will be (see how that rhymed?)

Wilber, I'm boycotting Sam's. I went in there with a shop list of expendables, filled the cart full to the tune of about 1400 (which included one of those fancy igloo Yeti look-a-likes, for Ken's huntin'), rolled up to the checkout with the shop visa in hand, and they say "sorry sir, we don't accept visa". I said wtf, left my cart sitting there, felt guilty, went back and paid with my personal monies. EErrr   The door greeter said "but we take them at the fuel pumps" and to that I said "I didn't come here for gas" and left.

So everyone agrees if you want a good MT that the Toyo MT's are hard to beat? Needing to get a set of MT's for JK before winter hits, always ran the old BFG MT's but those new KM2's bring the suck as far as I'm concerned they wear way too quick.

Classifieds / Stak B-box 2 Speed Aluminum Transfer Case EB Early Bronco
« on: October 20, 2015, 11:54:24 AM »
SOLD

I ran this in my personal 1973 early bronco. This was mated to a C4 and has High Angle Driveline flanges front and rear. Also included is a custom laser cut & built skid / mount plate. My EB was a trailer queen and this case has no where near 500 miles on the unit. Low range is 4.13-1.00, the case has always functioned flawlessly. It is clean but a used unit and there will be a few minor scratches on the exterior of the case along with slight rusting on the drive flange etc. Has twin stick control for front digs etc. This is the b-box configuration which is meant to fit in between the narrow frame rails on an early bronco & will fit many other applications as well. If you are building or have capable off road EB and want the strongest aftermarket t-case ever produced for this model truck this is your chance to buy one of these rare units. Located 80516 can crate for a small fee & truck freight on your dime. Asking 2K obo

have this for sale locally as well

Thanks for the link Ken, I've had several mills over the years all used bridgeports. You can find them in good shape for $3K but again moving them is a pain. I currently have a large Powermatic drill press with a swiss mill table and its not a BP either!  :o

I always ran a 3 phase converter as well. They work but are noisy, actually they have a weird hum or sound to them that will drive you nuts. I was looking at the single phase conversions and would choose that route in the future, fyi for anyone looking.

10158
Ken, if you don't mind me asking what is the approx. retail price on that mill along with specs? I sold my 2hp Bridgeport prior to moving. At 2k its pretty hard to move without some larger equipment. But at 700# that mill might be something I could handle here in my garage......

I think a lot depends on who is administering the program. Also depends on your "area" as we are prone to floods, wildfires and tornados. Missing people so search and rescue is also common place here with all the extreme outdoor activities. Our instructor is pretty much not by the book. Hits main points and then focuses on our AO

I would like to see the program now.  I took it over 10 years ago now when it was just in its infancy...wonder how much has changed.

Why couldn't you swap title and vin from old truck? We did this on all of our rock crawler builds. This allowed us to title them so we could legally drive them on highways to and from trails. Granted it was KY but we titled our in Indiana........

These hummers can never be driven on highways.

These work really well, had a carhart camo one I used for years, now its pulling winch accessory duty in back of JK. I used an assault backpack I had laying around last Friday but like the tool bag mo better. I really like them for multiple uses, easy to strap down to things. In fact I will be adding one at least to the WR450 build......

I have 2 of these bags that came with drills. One's loaded up with shotgun shells, plugs, and lube. The other is a range bag with tools, lube, shells, etc. They have little pockets on the inside for drill bits or whatever.

I agree, getting holes put in me isn't part of plan. But then again having a good plan for the unknown is better than no plan......

10168
I looked at KTM as well, however the initial price tag & increased maintenance to me was a no go. I don't need the fastest bike so imo reliability & decreased maintenance trumped speed.

10169
Was originally looking at the dual sport WR250R until I started talking with 24yr old sales/racer and he sold me on this. Just seemed easier to modify this for street than beef up the other to try and do what I wanted. This has a lot of good qualities that I will detail shortly that were OEM.........

I also read your build before purchasing, a lot of good info and direction there.

That thing looks like it will rip a hole in the fabric of time/space

I acquired a couple sets of C's but have read up on this a lot and the fact that I will not have a supply chain bringing me replacements I will be acquiring some american made steel versions. I'm not super old so my thought on weight is mo PT...........

10171
Looks like you've got it figured Shawn.

copy that! ;)

& thanks to overwatch_09 for the helpful insight via the picture posting thread for knuckleheads like me!

10172
A little more insight. Prior to the move I was setup fairly well as far as being prepared in transportation. Well, that was turned on its head. So in a lot of regards I'm back to square one. One of which is off road capability. Before I had numerous off road vehicles that were extremely capable. From ATV's to 73 EB crawler, to an 04 Rubicon to 4609 MF tractor. As it stands I have a bone stock (other than a 9K winch) 2008 JK. Now I do have plenty in store for it as well, however I wanted something with some immediate off road prowess. So enter the Yamaha WR450F. Now you may ask why I am making a perfectly legit dirt bike into a street capable machine? Because of laws, there will always be those pesky guys in uniform following laws and this is one less thing I have to worry about now or in the future.......

10173

OK, so here is the bike in stock form. Thought I would start an imgur account and try my hand at posting pics.

As some of you know I am new to my area as we just relocated from 18 hours away. The locals I know I can count on my one hand. So I happen to get notice of a local course called CERT. It is a program designed by FEMA and administered to locals for free by the police dept. Part of the gig is that they have us earn our CPR / AED certificate (good idea for everyone). Second is they utilize community volunteers in the case of a disaster and for other things like the local fireworks show helping guide knuckleheads to correctly park their cars etc. Anyhow I saw this as an opportunity to A) help and B) gain local knowledge at a faster pace than I would have otherwise. Just an idea that may fit for some of the other folks here on the board..........

10175
& to everyone else thanks for the warm welcome!

10176
Nope, he's to busy texting me texas weather reports. Complaining its hot or something down there?!? Who'd a thunk it that Texas was hot? :o

Yea, it's good to have Shawn back

Now we need to get Ash on here more

Then those two can get to arguing again

and we can sit back and enjoy it all!

Sound like a plan?

10177
Jeez, thought you would have this done by now! What happened you break a leg or something?  ???

10178
Never heard of him, ban him already............. ;D

Anybody ever heard of this guy before I ban him again?

I once knew a Shawn...even made him a moderator here...Then he left the building and has never been heard from since!

Shawn, welcome back!

Have anything to complain about before you get in going here? :)

10179
OK, first I must apologize for the lack of participation on this board. Don will probably want to ban me a few times consecutively for my lack of DOTness aimed at him here lately. Anyhow I'll try to make this a short story and then get on to the build thread.

As most of you know I owned Great Lake Off Road which I sold in Jan. Then had a couple equipment auctions and finally sold my home / shop in Indiana as well. I resigned from my day job as GM for a large steel company after sixteen years and followed my wife along with our three girls to Colorado where she landed a job. First major move in our family ever, the wife and I needed a change of scenery. I wanted less to do and decided for a number of reasons early 2015 was as good a time as any to cash some chips in and try our luck somewhere else. There are times in life when a number of circumstances all converge that you need to step back take a deep breath and look at what is most important. In a nut shell this is what happened to us. I believe for whatever reason we were meant to be in Colorado, definitely not my first choice due to their communist gun laws but it seems to have played out well so far.

So on to the build thread, I will be building a 2015 Yamaha WR450F. For those of you not familiar the WR450F is basically a WR250 frame with a 450 motor sandwiched in to it. Its an agile trail riding machine that has the power and reliability to be very capable with a few tweaks here and there. As we speak it is being converted to DOT compliance making it road worthy. I am not doing it but letting professionals do this as it was part of the negotiation for purchase. Here in CO to be road worthy it needs a few things such as DOT approved tires, brake light, mirror and horn. Probably a couple things I left off but you get the idea.

If there is one big downside potential to this build it would be that it is fuel injected, great for the elevation changes here in CO but not so good against an EMP threat. My thought was if an EMP hits locally we have a lot of problems besides a bike that won't run & I still have my walking boots I guess.

Replacement parts rarely fit right. If my memory serves me correctly the drivers door replacement fits well but passengers door is a no go on those trucks or at least they were fifteen years ago anyhow. Start modifying.......

yeah I think I am going to have to pull it all off again and modify those hinge mounting holes?

10186
Well we could but Don already has, several times I think. See he originally wanted me to feel right at home so he banned me several times......., ;D

well, that's good.  I was about to say we needed to ban the offender, pass some new laws/rules, and send all of y'all to sensitivity training.....

My thought was to use those tanks versus the forklift tanks for my EB that runs on pane. But we'll see, it was a good deal I so I jumped & they are currently in storage at this time.

Ultimately, I decided I didn't want to use propane or the gas engine for that matter.  The propane system went to a good home, Sean, aka stlaser.  Not sure what his plans are for it.  Sean?

Shawn as of Jan 1st sold GLO, I am still helping with the transition with the new ownership. When you get ready for that stuff shoot me a pm & I'll see what I can get new owners to do since you'll be advertising their stuff on this thread.

what are some suggestions for a new thread name for this thread?  lets hear them.

this weekend if I can find a place to get the truck up in the air a little, I am going to spend quite a bit of time with the pressure washer underneath it.  living in the city limits of a city that places water restrictions on folks, I have to find a place away from nosey cry baby neighbors that like to start drama to make this happen.  So once everything has been given a good cleaning, I will be able to get a better idea of what it is that I am dealing with.

thank you all for the information on the front axle as well as the x-case.  I was actually under the impression that it was a 205, but after shawn's pointed that out I did some research and better educated myself.  so again, thank you shawn.

I do know this, shawn will be getting an order from me for some of those stout diff covers as well as the disk brake conversion kits he has talked about for the rear axle.

for those that have classic GM vehicles, I found this site https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/ to be very very informational and helpful.  some other information that I got yesterday was to the GM Archives.  their number is 734-462-5543 ext:163 / 734-261-5086 they can provide build sheets and original dealer/factory information on GM vehicles.

so here are the 3 things that happened yesterday.  1. I found a new hood at the junk yard in perfect condition for $75 and 2. I found a guy here in town that will repair/replace and rebuild the steering column for $150.  and 3. I have come to realize that I have to actually sit my happy butt down and make a check sheet of everything that needs to be worked on, because otherwise tracey and I will be completely overwhelmed.

Also worth noting, Dana on all their housing marked them for what model they were in the center chunk casting. Most times especially on older axles such as this front unit you may need the assistance of a pocket knife (& for all you city slickers out there an old sos pad will work as well) to scrape the gunk off to reveal the inset cast number. It will be located cover side in the gusset below where the axle tube is pressed in. If memory serves me correctly it is right side as you face cover. So this particular axle will have a number "44" cast into it.

D44 confirmed. 10 bolt 8.5 corp. had completely round circumference on the cover. d44 is more like the deformed stop sign you see there. both were balljoint from 77-81 and 3/4 ton only option was d44 till '82. Looks like a really nice clean slate!

Nate, nice find. T-case is NP203 which is highly common in the 3/4 tons. I parted out many of those trucks for the running gears here locally. The NP203 is chain driven versus the NP205 which is gear to gear. Those chains can stretch fyi and are problematic.

So what's the end result look like? What barrel /length did you go with?
Sorry for the long delayed response. I bought a mega arms 18" 1:10 twist via aim for a steal. I just purchased a JP adjustable gas block for it & installed it today. Left the free float hand guard off. Once it warms up a bit I'm gunna take it out & dial gas block in. Once it's assembled & clean free of all the white Latium grease mess I'll snap some pics.

I was going to ask you how that project ever turned out. In addition to the adjustable gas block there are heavier buffer springs, that'll help smooth things out. I'll try and find the ones I've seen and post them up for you. The gear site I gave you end up helping you out?

http://heavybuffers.com/ this is where I purchased my buffer.....

& yes, I purchased through the gear site you recommended. Nice stuff........
