I am with him at the site still in my pj’s from this morning when he called
There are no horizontal floors left. Part of the roof has collapsed
He and the family was left with nothing
We are purchasing some clothes and have accommodations for them. The family dog was killed in the blaze but my friend gave it mouth to mouth for some time to try to resuscitate
Lets lift this family up in prayer knowing that although the devil gets in a lick or two, our God is victorious in the end!

Lifting them up in prayer. God works all things for good for those who believe.  I know it's hard to see that right now, but it's true.

Don, are there any immediate needs? I may have some things out in the garage from the move that I don’t have a need for right now.  Just down the interstate, so not out of the way.

OK, so I don't know what sort of support they will need
He is not destitute (Has money)
We already purchased a half dozen outfits for all of them
I could purchase more if you wanted me to...
Their space is limited at GrandMa's house so I think they need "Just enough."
We will help them find tempo housing in the coming days
After that, I think a process of insurance will steer the thing followed by rebuilding
Frankly, I'd say contact him and be prepared to do what your heart (Holy spirit) tells you to do

Let me know if you need physical help with your effort if you decide to do something.

PM me for his phone number if you want to just talk...

I certainly hope the forward process is smooth.  I know that USAA, who insures our home, will pay for immediate accommodations and per diem in a case like this.

Moreover, even though this sucks and personal things collected over a lifetime can never be replaced...I am very happy to hear that everyone is safe.  Keep us updated Don. God Bless.

He will have insurance come out and look at it, probably three weeks to get the stuff documented and anything worth salvaging removed than a construction crew comes in and demo and rebuild usually

I started my life in construction when I was 17 doing demo on homes that had been ravaged by fire.  By far the worst is the ID10T who opens the fridge or freezer after the house power has been off for three weeks.

Duan make sure you take video and lots of photos of things inside the home.  Don’t put it past looky looes to take things that are yours from the home.

We are having breakfast this morning...more to report

But let me share this

When Duane first called me in the heat of the moment and I was hobbling out to my truck, oddly, I had but one thought. Everyone has them, call it a mind's eye picture sort of thing, you just see something.

Mine was an intense sorrow that he was going to lose this shadow box of his little brothers mementos. His brother had just become a 2Lt in the Wyoming national guard. Wasn't long after that he died.
Duane built a box with his burial flag, his second lieutenant bars, his crossed rifles as he was an infantry officer. It contained his awards and decorations, you see his brother already had a military history he earned as an enlisted grunt. All that was in that box, and it was resting prominently on the fireplace mantle. I saddened deeply at the loss of that, Duane misses and loves his brother. They were both warriors, Duane survives although blind in one eye, but his brother does not.

Yesterday, the firemen dug that box out of a Heep of smoking debris in the basement...It was intact!!!!!!!!!!!

That, gentlemen, was God sparing what was important, whilst allowing the house to succumb to flames hot enough to warp the steel "I" beams that were holding the thing up...And there is more to this story. I'll share later on

We serve an awsome God...Just and mighty is he and he loves us!

In one home I worked on, the young teenage boy had a zippo with the army insignia on it and some foreign coinage in a night stand next to his bed. As we emptied the home I set little trinkets that I thought might have value up on the brick garden outside. The young man had been given the zippo from his granddad and the coins where from places he had served.

Do they know the cause of the fire yet ?

I guess Duane is too busy to write anything here, well, actually, he has no computer anymore (Good thing??)

So after sharing breakfast with him and his wife, I want to share some more

This is a God story, a witness if you will about just how personal and close in our God really is. This just blows me away, really does.

Christina started off with the statement, "Don, you like God stories, well I have one to tell." She wept at the table for some time but she finally got it out.

She and Duane had married a short time before Desert shield/storm. He was a new officer flying Hueys, then Black Hawks in the 3rd ACR (Third Armored Calvary Regiment), in El-Paso, TX. She had to put him on a jet and send him off to war while remaining there and then continue to fly as a Delta flight attendant from there. commuting to work.

She, like all the wives watched and waited while the war started and we went on to a desert victory. And she waited some more as his unit got closer and closer to redeploying home to El-Paso. Finally the day came, and because she was a flight attendant, she knew when his contract jet was coming in. She told me that she waited out by the ramp and watched the landing lights of Duane's jet come in, then land. Then she watched as the thing moved over to the military ramp where it parked.

Somehow Duane had gotten hold of a dozen red and white roses. When she saw him, he was holding them. He gave them to her as she rushed up to him, their first meeting in months.

Yea, this is real stuff folks, but if you leave now, you will miss the blessing.

She kept those roses. She kept them until the pedals began to fall off the stems and she collected all of them and placed them into a jar which she sealed with a big piece of cork...of cork and placed them on her dresser. On the day of the fire, they still sat atop her dresser. But the dresser burned up, along with the bedroom floor and the pieces of all that fell into the basement along with the remains of everything else.

But, a fireman rummaging through the ashes found that bottle. The cork lid was scorched some, but the glass was intact along with the perfectly preserved rose pedals on the inside! Along with that, believe it or not, they found her "Good" wedding ring, and some strings of pearls which they had strung for his girls. Those were also intact.

Christine told me that this morning, her and Claudia, his youngest daughter, opened the bottle containing the rose pedals, and out came a strong beautiful fragrance of roses! She was stunned by how strong the scent was, and that bottle had not been opened since 1991 when he had come home to her, a hero from that conflict.

Think God doesn't pay attention or notice the small things?? He may have allowed a home to be consumed by flames, but the flowers that that young pilot had given to his bride of more than a quarter century ago were spared.

Never, ever, could I think our God is not like a father to us. The evidence is in a million things like this.

I am so happy to share this with you...

Prayers sent, wish I was more on time with this. As long as the family is safe, it is OK. (sorry for the pup)

Mementos are the big thing to loose, I have been through that. So glad you found that box!

Being fully insured is helpful, but it takes months to get through it all.

God Bless you all Duane!!

This story gives validity and substance to “stop and smell the roses”. Sometimes God shows you what is most important, weather you live it or are lost in things.

I was hoping Duane would come on and update himself, but perhaps he has not purchased a computer yet

Things are going very well

He is moving into a temporary home
He had a home alarm system which was supposed to sound alarms and send a call to the fire department...It did none of the above. That is in the hands of legal people already
His home owners insurance provider, USAA is treating him like royalty
Basically he is going to get near max payout on the home value, the contents and other covered items. USAA is going to restore his 1/4 mile long driveway, their dime.
Demolition is scheduled for about 10 days from now. Everything comes out, even the foundation which was cooked and cracked and no longer any good.
I believe he is going to come back with a ranch home which he will build as the contractor, just subbing out the myriad of tasks. He is very good at that.
His church came in to support as did the hockey league and of course his friends. They will come out in the end very nicely.

I am happy to hear that their situation is turning positive.  I too am a client of USAA and I know my policy would very take care my family.  To me, they are the number one place to go for banking through investments and insurance.

Very happy to hear they will be just fine.  Perhaps they will look into one of the properties on survivor realty.com.  Not to make light of the situation but there are old silo bunkers on there that are really cool.

Yea, if any one can qualify for a USAA policy, Please, Please do yourself a favor, get it!

I think you have to be:
Mil vet
spouse or child of mil vet
Special circumstances dependent of mil person

If you think you may qualify:

800-531-8222

I have been a member since 1979, so what short of 40 years...

They have never disputed a claim
They always paid more than I needed to repair my car or whatever it was they covered
I have had a checking account and probably a half dozen other bank accounts with them since the 70's
I get a dividend every year from them, accidents or not, claims or no.
You get discounts which increase over the years. My auto policy is discounted more than 50% and my homeowners policy is now discounted about 60%
I have had life insurance with them since I was in my 20's. They have special services for when you get deployed. Special discounts for when you serve in hostile areas. All sorts of freebies.
Car loans, home loans, credit cards, investments, mutual funds...dozens of them. Some I was in for two decades or more.
I think they even have free rust protection if you own a jeep or similar Krappy type car... ;-)

All in all it is simply the best company in America. Nothing better, but it is a bit exclusive...I hope you all qualify and visit.

Agreed Don, if you are directly related to a military service member active or retired you are eligible. I have been a member for over 10 years though my fathers Navy service. Best company I have ever been a part of. They are consistently excellent. That is more than I can say for just about every other company I have ever come across.

I checked today after hearing about Chief’s experience. I don’t but if I’m reading this right widows do qualify as long as their spouse had USAA while they were married.

Don,

I have one minor detractor to USAA, maybe two.

We’ve been with usaa 11 years, had auto loans, mortgages, and various types of insurance.

Our first mortgage which we got with them was an ABSOLUTE nightmare, apparently there mortgage department at that time was.... overall terrible, and we have been told it has gotten better since then.

Our mortgage now was sold to Wells Fargo, after the small finance bank did it, once we closed they sold it.

Life insurance and auto Insurance we have with them, I don’t think can be beat, particularly auto, I’ve looked several times.

Home owners insurance, (the one downfall) they are no where near the price point we have with our current insurers, which is mercury group. To get the exact same coverage, last year, was something like 300$ more than our current. And from a close friend and home insurance adjuster, we’ve got pretty good coverage.

Otherwise, the horrible mortgage experience. I still would recommend them over any one else.

Oh one other thing, they don’t have big rig insurance, they partner with progressive for that, sadly. We had to get it for our m925 because of its weight.

Well when I had my garage fire I was out of the house for 6 months during the rebuild. It was supposed to be under 2 months, but the fire dept damaged everything in the house!

Farmers put us in a big chain hotel with breakfast and dinner buffet's. They handled the billing and gave us a food allowance. I was insured for reconstruction with code upgrades.

Adjuster was here the next day and for about a week as I went through things for claims. It was around $200k hen finished.

I have written the USAA CEO a couple times now about Progressive Insurance. I feel there is no way honorable men and women should be caused by USAA to have any thing to do with progressive insurance. I would not take it and use GEICO for the Triumph and DR-650.

The site has been cleaned of all traces of a house, not even the footer remains.

Now its up to them to decide if they want to rebuild, or just throw in the towel and buy something else or perhaps build in a better location.
