So i'm starting to tool my shop. Predominantly woodworking, but I have also inherited a oxy/acetalyne torch and a Lincoln tombstone welder that i'll have setup at some point.

Got this drill press from my dad, i think i posted elsewhere where i cleaned it up. I built this stand for it on casters. You'll find that one of the themes for the woodshop and things i build as far as organization/carts/etc... i don't want to see any fasteners. So i'll be using more half-lap joinery, mortise and tenon, dados, etc. And pocket-holes if i need to use screws. Here's the stand for the drill press

Also picked up this Dust Collector. Will ultimately build a 2-stage cyclone setup, but this is a 2HP, 1700 CFM unit from Grizzly. Runs on 220, so i'm wiring up the shop with 220 plugs here and there to future proof for 'bigger' tools as well (planer/jointer/table saw/etc).

Also picked up insulation and sheeting for the double bay. This will go up as soon as wiring is done, next couple weeks.

Next, I built some clamp racks for my growing collection of Bessey clamps. First i started by laminating some 3/4 AC ply

Then i cut grooves for the bars. Did this by drilling holes on the drill press, then hogging out the material with the table saw

Used some scrap material to create this for Quick Clamps and spring clamps

Here they are together. Once the walls are insulated and sheeted, i'll probably put these on french cleats on this wall so they're more modular, and moveable

Lots more coming up!

From my other thread, here's the table saw I picked up recently. It's the hybrid by Ridgid. Pretty happy with it so far

I got a whole bunch of new tools that I'll try and share some pics of also. Heck maybe I'll go snap some pics now!

We wanted to declutter the garage a little, and also get the "trailer stuff" closer to the trailer, so I insulated and sheeted this section and then built some shelves. This stuff is used for camping, tailgating, etc, so it made sense to have it so close to the RV
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170329/0527194dc92de82fae2ac76d4586747a.jpg)

And here's my wood storage for now. All of this will get used in the coming month or so for various projects
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170329/25bcb5e37ae5a2aab78cb0b6ea9ccd70.jpg)

New tools!!

My framing nailer went bad, so I splurged and picked up this new Ridgid
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170329/9bc858fed99af14d4bd8ad40bc00ed41.jpg)

And also a new Brad nailer
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170329/57c92abc71016727c88996fa0652e984.jpg)

And shoot, why not a new palm router
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170329/76f1d7cd9f6f53c5bb37bf0b4a2a5d24.jpg)

The Ridgid lifetime service agreement is why I have been choosing Ridgid tools in addition to my normal DeWalt fanboy bias, and it helps that most of these that I've purchased have been on sale

And also a new Dremel, since my previous chinaman WEN p.o.s. crapped out mid project

Weight was a big factor, the Ridgid has a Mg bell housing so it's light... needed to shoot short 2" nails well as well as full size sinkers, since i use 2" galvy ring shanks for fencing. Ridgid does both really well. Feels great in the hand, has a nice rafter hook that you can loop on your bags too if on a ladder or whatever. The depth adjustment is super slick too, very easy even with gloves on. Got great reviews online as well from pros. This is the 'new' Ridgid. The previous model did have issues feeding short nails, so stay away from that one. It came down to this one and a Hitachi, which is kind of the standard around here. Every framing crew you see will be running Hitachi.

And the kicker was the LSA (lifetime service agreement), which beyond the mfg warranty will cover failure outside of abuse.

One little shop project today, weather was so nice I tried to take advantage of it and work outside.

But, today I put a decent blade on my miter saw, Diablo thin kerf 60 tooth. And, fabbed a zero clearance plate as well. Lots of detail you can't see. Had to rabbet the underside edges, and routed out recesses for various things underneath, since I made it out of 3/4" ply

See the difference, the red inserts were factory, and flimsy plastic at that
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170331/94059db75fed950d178a7b6acf8eaeb8.jpg)

For those who have no idea why you'd want zero-clearance inserts, this way the workpiece is supported right up to the cut line, so you get less tear out. Really only matters for precision cuts... could care less for framing material

Heck the thin blade and 60t is just a nice upgrade. Zero clearance is even better. Will it work on bevel cuts?

My new Kobalt saw went threw the first blade in like 10 cuts, must have hit something. Put a 40t Diablo on it and smooth as silk.
Title: Re: Dawg's Shop
Post by: Dawg25385 on March 31, 2017, 12:05:02 AM
I can cut through the plate if I need to for beveled cuts, but in truth I've never use that functionality.

I put a 50 tooth combination Diablo blade on my table saw and it's money... the diablos are great value

Been battling a wicked cold since getting back from vacation, but finally could get some work done on the shop.

Insulation... my favorite.

Sheeted this corner so I could get some shelves up to "musical chairs" the stuff in the area that is to be insulated and sheeted next
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170426/868c28c26bfcc8bbe5e44120d2c93209.jpg)

I mitered the corners so no visible end grain, and will fill all countersunk screw holes
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170426/1a7af33d419d073ee28cf49a38a1de60.jpg)

Oh, and I scored a bunch of oak cabinets off Craigslist from a house somebody was remodeling. Will need a good cleaning and some RnR, but will work great in the shop

I like the sheeting and the mitered ends. My shelves just screw into the studs where ever the are.

I will admit My end supports are like that, but they are on the end corner and I set the center support flush. I may steal the ply walls (then rock) for my new cabinets as they are all lengths.

You could probably cut a 2x2 to length to fit inside of the shelf at the corner.  Start at the top so you can drive a screw up from the bottom of the bottom shelf to secure the bottom of the leg.  Maybe make the bottom leg a little beefier as you won't be able to attach that one to the floor.

Almost done sheeting, thanks to my dad who helped me all day yesterday. He was my cut man. 18 junction boxes and a electrical panel to cut out. It's not screwed off yet, but will do that and the rest of the small pieces over the next couple days

Not sure if ceiling paint would cover it or not.

It's cheap like dirt, get a sprayer and be done.
You'll regret not doing it while it's easy.
White makes it sooooo bright.

Just suggesting it before it's real full.

I would stick with the wood look as well.  Shows less dinge and damage.    You could spray it with fence sealant to add a little reflectivity for light and keep the wood still protected, where it's inside it's more than likely a single application needed

Built some lumber racks to organize things a bit

Got my miter saw station built, just need to plumb the dust collection and it'll be done
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170620/99df1fa050ebc4379908164348a4f662.jpg)

Got a little cubby built for my sander and pads
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170620/b8f9858a574dd40ce728015d624412e9.jpg)

Trimmed all windows and doors with 1x4 fir

And, right now I'm working on my permanent work bench. Used the new chisels I got for Father's Day to clean up the lap joints in the legs, I hogged out most of the material with the dado blade on the table saw

Last week my big project was refinishing a crib we got for our little girl. Turned out great. Used a HVLP sprayer for the 4 coats of Polycrylic clear coat, worked awesome for a cheap Harbor Freight machine

Small update, I went ahead and ordered some blast gates and picked up a bunch of PVC to install all the ducting for my big dust collector. Right now I've got dust collection to my miter station, table saw, and a 20' hose for cleanup. Stubbed future drops for planer, jointer, and maybe a downdraft table for sanding.

Thanks guys. Praying for everything to go smoothly.

Doesn't help that i took a big tumble the other day and mangled a rib pretty bad in my mid back... but i will certainly be able to rally when the baby decides to join us.

Our family friends who are the breeders have also offered to take Mack for a big of a dog vacation while we are at the hospital and bringing the baby home, so he'll be there a week or so.

Well gents, I'm a daddy. Our little girl was born 10/2 at 21:02. 7lbs 5oz. Mama did great, and baby is healthy, happy, and hungry! We decided to come home rather than spend a 2nd night at the hospital.

God is good. We are unbelievably blessed. Best day of my life

Small shop update. I decided to border my benches with some 1" oak to both cover the plywood edges, and also to give some hardwood strength to the edges

Countersunk all the screws and plugged the holes with oak dowel. (No pics of that yet) Will stain and seal later today

I applied stain tonight. Clear coat will be Saturday

Note, the workbench island is only partially complete. There will be lots of shelves and cubbies under the work surface, just putting that part off for awhile. But I wanted to get the work surfaces done and finish applied so I?d stop being so paranoid about setting my beer down and getting a water ring on the wood lol

Purdy. Now set something hot on it to break it in.

Watched a guy build a steel workbench once. Soon as he was done he hit it with a ballpeen hammer, broke it in!!

Will probably be something wet rather than hot, or maybe something greasy... need to spend some time on my chainsaws.

I do not. It's on my list of wants... with about 1000 other things! The festool domino is slick, but damn expensive

As soon as i get done building all the stuff that I want!!  :beercheers:

Danke.

Baby is doing great. Her sleep patterns are all over the place, but she's a happy baby. Only really fusses when she's hungry, has to burp, or needs a new diaper.

Just do an oil change on the dmax and accidently drop the oil filter on top if you really wanna break it in. you wouldn't have to stain it....see, I saved you a bunch of work! :)

New and way to nice to ever use as a shop area. Haven't you looked at the photos of the other shops on this site. Most are clean and tidy but man you are way overboard, that place is nicer than my living room area.
