fascinating Dave.  I'm not worried about a pro taking time to steal my $1600 trailer, but very cool.  I just ordered a pick set on amazon just because....

I don't think its worth it personally.  I much prefer the barrel strength jack single barrel.  It very much like makers just a wee bit hotter.

So today was the last day of vacation before going back to work Monday.  Needed to get some mundane stuff done that I had been putting off.

So, woke up at 0500 to quoffee up and relax.  0630, go outside to remove the spike lugs from the dually so I can take it to Discount to have them rotated, which entails dismounting and remounting and balancing.  The spike lugs are powder coated and if you put an impact on them I'm sure it will tear up the finish so I put the chrome lugs back on it.  0730 head to discount and get in line.  #6 so I'm feeling good about not wasting a bunch of time today.  Buddy picked me up and we went to breakfast and then dropped back by the house and picked up the LB7 and trailer to run a few errands.  Go recylcle 10 quarts of oil and pick up some oil for the van and some rainx.  Also went to the store and bought 6 headlights (low, high, fogs) for the wifes SUV,  $160 worth of Silver Star Ultras....OMG that's a lot of money for lights.

Got those installed and then Discount calls....truck is ready......but we didnt have the right adapter to fit the wheels so they couldnt balance them....SMH really?  You couldnt tell me that before I left it there?  They tell me I'll have to take it to another store to get them balanced.   So there goes 3 hours since I have to sit and wait since I don't have a ride.  Manager is a good guy at the new store and drives a lifted dodge so he knows the routine.  He works me in as quick as possible and says he wants to earn my business away from the other store.  (he saw all the history of my purchases (2 sets of wheels and tires, 2 more sets of tires on the other two vehilcles in the last couple of years, all high end tires)

I'm now going to drive the extra 5 miles and do business with that guy.

So then I go get my trailer, I had them take the china bombs off of it and put some 'Murica Goodyear Endurance trailer tires put on it.  They had low miles but were the cheapest chinese crap that could be put on a trailer so at 3 years old, I wanted tires I could rely on.

Then went to the beverage store so I could get a bottle of wine for a party I have to attend at my bosses house tomorrow and got some private reserve Makers Mark since they didnt have my single barrel barrel proof jack.  Its good but not as good as the 130proof Jack (sorry Mike)

Then took the truck to the car wash and there was a line, so i left it and walked a block to a burger joint and had a bun less double meat burger at 1530.

Then went and had 4 keys made for a masterlock at the little kiosk in the parking lot at Sears.  That brings back memories....the 70s and the hey day of Sears.

Got home and none of the 4 keys work.....fitting end to the marginally productive day....

I got it all in and adjusted the strike side to fit the weather strip. Just need to rip jamb extensions and figure out a threshold extension.

« on: January 04, 2018, 08:49:52 AM »
Jared, bought a prehung fiberglass door yesterday and it was hung for 2x4 walls.  I get the need for jamb extensions, but the threshhold is confusing me a bit.

I followed your instructions on hanging the door.  sub floor was level (thank the Lord) and plumbed the hinge side.

I accounted for the depth of sheetrock to be installed so that the frame will be flush with the sheetrock when installed.

The door is not perfectly true and the upper corner of the door lacks about 3/16 from being flush with the frame when shut, like the bottom is (it still engages the weather strip)

question 1: Should I install the latch side out of plumb by that amount to make the door sit perfectly flush to the frame?

question 2: The threshold of the door when framed into the 2x6 wall leaves a small part of the subfloor/subsill exposed in front of the threshold.  How do you deal with that?  A metal pan, a ripped down piece of treated calked and painted?

Any advice or pictures would be appreciated

So two days ago you were done with them and wanted to return to Toyo tires.   What’s the verdict ? You rotated them was all?

D rated tires just aren't made to handle a 10k lb+ truck Don.
They would probably work great on Shawn's Jeep
tho.

On the tires: Good news!

I must have had one bad one, and it must have been the right rear.

Reason, that is the tire that is currently hanging on the spare carrier and my truck drives completely normally. Now I am not saying that the issue may not reappear, but I am saying that I drove the truck down to the farm 50+ miles pulling the trailer with the outhouse strapped to it (What #3,500 ish??) and back at 45-60MPH and encountered no vibration at all. I had no steering wheel shimmy and with regard to the steering, it was greatly improved. Not much crown on these narrow country roads to speak of and for 75% of the distance there you cannot keep the steering wheel still less than 2 seconds. No exaggeration, the roads are literally constant turns most of the way there! Point with all that being that there is no way to check to see if it wanders following the crown just yet.
If I could keep this ride, these tires would do their job and get me through another year and then I'd upgrade to the "E" rated tires which hopefully, then, I could easily pay for.

yup rotated

well, day started by needing a trip to the ER from spitting hot coffee through my nose because of Dave's post on fuel leak....

Dave that sounds like something I would do.

So yesterday, (I'm still off work) I picked up a fiberglass door for the casita and a ordered a matching slab door for the main house.  Got it roughly installed although I have to build jam extensions since it was hung for a 2x4 wall.

Today I'll head over to the pool builder and see if he can mediate a settlement between my better half and me over decking material.  I want stamped concrete and she....we'll she doesnt know what she wants but it aint stamped concrete.

She was willing to use the Spray Deck over concrete but I think that would not fit with the rustic in the woods look.

Then I hope to install a few pieces of metal trim I picked up from the supply house to finish the porch on the casita and then clear off the rest of the  materials from the trailer so I can take it home and get ready to buy a big load of hardi plank supplies and get started on the exterior.

All this assumes I can get motivated to get out in the cold.  It was 22 here this morning, nothing compared to some of you guys but I don't have a ton of cold weather gear and working in gloves is just clumsy.

I got my chiselthingy that kyle recommended as well.  Pretty cool little tool.

Don  one suggestion from the cheap seats, if I may.  A good plumb bob has been indispensable for me in building my casita.  With bows and such in lumber the plumb bob helps me get stuff straight.  Especially working by myself where I can hang it from a nail and go  to the bottom of the wall and make adjustments and fasten while watching the bob.

Don, have you priced out doing  metal pole barn approach with a shed roof? Rpanel on exterior walls and roof?

I havent done a side by side but would think that the materials costs might be lower  for the metal with the price of wood nowadays.

Just a thought,
