Interesting mental exercise....

both trucks almost always have 60-90 gallons of fuel on board....check
Full med kit in the truck....check
Family has go bags, with clothes, bottle of water, datrex bars and an MRE, toothbrush
My go bag also has my handheld HAM radio, 50 watt amp and roll up jpole for better coms
My chest rig hangs in the closet with 10 full mags of M855.  Grab a few ARs.  Pistol is nearby and I have extra mags in my chest rig along with a few chemsticks and knife and flashlight

At that point I probably have 3 minutes left.  Exit early and head to the secondary location where food stores can carry me 6-9 months.  Ammo and weapons for the rest of my life. Hope I can get through until garden produces and barter economy is established.

After that, all plans are worthless anyway so who knows.

Don, also remember that the heavier the trailer the less payload you have.  You can make a very heavily reinforced trailer but if its overkill then it takes away from your payload.

Food for thought

Congrats Dave!

Today, I had family over for bible study and then did some non physical activity to let my body rest.   I finished building my 1U Rack Server and got it fired up and Windows 10 installed.  Plan on using it for a file server and a video server for the new security cameras at the Hide/Retirement place.

Supermicro Server MOBO
8GB of DDR3
DVD ROM
4TB WD Purple drive (for video)
1.5TB WD Black (for OS and files)
Intel Dual Core 3.2GHz (not fast, but fast enough and not too much of a power hog)
Thermal Take low profile CPU fan
Athena 400W powersupply
Windows 10 pro

Finished that and cleaned up all the parts strewn across the dining room table before moving on to installing a McGard tailgate lock (the fancy version of a hose clamp on the hinge.

sounds good!  Thanks

Don, I believe control is a fleeting illusion.......

Also, you may already know this, but if you are having material delivered its cheaper to bring in bigger trucks.  The belly dumps carry 26 tons a trip and can at least lay a long strip of material along the road as they dump

I have girls so advice on hitting probably not very good.  We've always taught them that hitting is not acceptable but if someone hits you then you lay them out.  A heavy bag or dummy is good practice but you reserve hitting people for self defense.

As for eating, my wife required the girls to try everything we put in front of them.  If they didn't like it that was fine but they had to try it.  She never fed them junk (they were 5 years old before they ever had a donut...and someone at school gave it to them without our permission)  fortunately mine were never really picky eaters.  My wife has given them fresh fruit with every meal since they were born and she feeds them healthy food.  Even now as teen and tween they don't eat much junk food.

Bottom line is as long as they eat something healthy, they can be picky.

after stretching the last of the barbed wire and driving 2 more T posts, I have decided that I am going to rent a powered post driver.  The soil is as hard as concrete and that manual driver is taking about 300 blows or more to get the post in the ground..

I contacted the rock yard and they are going to come give me an estimate on laying the rock on the 700ft of driveway.

Done for now with the fence until I get back from San Diego.  I'm looking forward to relaxing in 78 degree weather and 68 degree water.....
We rented a house in Carlsbad/Oceanside area overlooking the beach and plan on relaxing and checking out the San Diego Zoo and a few other attractions

96 degrees and 106 heat index.  No breeze.  dismantling an existing fence and rolling up the wire and then stretching and splicing barbed wire and driving t posts.

Pics tomorrow. soreness and scratches from barbed wire and mesquite trees tonight....good thing my tetanus shot is good to 2018

Trump is a product of the frustrations of the flyover states.  36 states are now completely controlled by republican govenors and statehouses.

The issue confronting us is not the  media or liberals...it is the RINO conservatives fighting the will of the people in the house and senate.  McConnel and Ryan must go.  We need to clean house in 2018 and run real conservatives against these people.  They act like they don't have the majority.  The dems would be ramming left leaning socialist agendas down our throat.  We should be getting much more done but these RINOs are our real enemies, not the dems.

I respect McCain for his service but he is the prototypical RINO and needs to go.  When it suited his purpose he said build the wall, when he was not running for re election he said no way he was for building the wall.

Primary challengers for the RINOs is where we have to spend our dollars to support candidates.  It's time for a house cleaning....

propane is interesting for a vehicle that sits a lot....

Guys I know nothing about jeeps or all the combos of differentials in them.  I also really like the FJ40 size, the 60 not so much but I can't say that I've been up close to one.  I'm looking for rugged and simple but drivable too.  Which is why I'm leaning towards ruling out things like an LMTV and Unimog Doka

I've driven a few CJs and like them, although the scrambler is really cool but again, stupid expensive like the FJ40

I may have to take another look at the M37s but unlike the CJ, i can't exactly put a jump seat in the back to haul 4

What am I missing?

Never thought about an fj60.  fj40 maybe but never an fj60.  Seems big for what I had in mind.  nice 40s are stupid expensive (but very cool)

I really like the clean steel dash of the early 70s jeeps (no pad)

I've vacillated between military vehicles or something more practical.  I just think I'd get more use out of a small 4wd than a LMTV

Wow. I love you guys(in a non gay kind of way).

I don't plan on rock crawling. The more I think of it after reading a bit the 4bt may be a novelty. I hear the vibration and weight and need to hear correctly can make them impractical.

Truth be told I want a simple EMP proof, no electronics, no emission requirement (older than 24 years in texas - which means 1983 newest)  go places larger vehicles can't go vehicle. Currently living in metropolis means I may have trouble getting out(ok I will have trouble getting out ) and I'd like something stupid simple and reliable and tough (ish). I like the flat steel dash of the early 70s jeeps from an aesthetics perspective and more and more the inline 258 seems a good fit.

So, I'm not sure if this should be in the Build Thread section or maybe in drive line.  Mods feel free to move. (change my profile or whatever else yall do to harass me...)

I would like to have a purely mechanical vehicle for a number of reasons.  A friend is offering me a free vehicle and I'm contemplating whether it might be worth a build, knowing that I am likely to go full retard oil change...

So here is the vehicle:  It is a 1985 Land Rover Series III 88 inch wheelbase 4cyl gas. It is right hand drive.  Body is aluminum and interior has been redone.

Frame is rusted and would have to be replaced.  I would not want to keep the gas engine and I would look to likely have different running gear.

Admittedly I have no experience with Rovers.  I do know that complete aftermarket galvanized chassis is available so the frame issue is easy to fix.  The track width is 4ft. 3 1/2 inches.

I envision a new frame and hanging heavier duty axles underneath it and buying a P Pump 4bt and manual trans.

I'm out of my element here and could use some real world advice.  Does a RHD vehicle make swapping running  gear (front axle and steering) a challenge?  I know I can weld and fit the 4bt and transmission, but the transfer case and axles give me some heartburn.  While it may be a free vehicle its easily a 10K plus project with new frame and a running 4bt and some new axles and transfer case.

It would fit the bill of no power anything, no AC, nada.  Simple and bullet proof and go anywhere.

So any advice here?  Should I just buy an old Jeep and run the other direction from this thing?

only in america can we have poverty with cell phones, flat screen, wi fi and fat people.

It used to be easy to pick out poor people....they were skinny.

Why don't we have a "special unit" for all those "I have a right to be in the military".  No hard training regimen, no discriminatory physical stamina requirements, etc.  Then we send them in to combat first to "size up the enemy"  and save our real warriors for the tough bad guys.

Sam,  great to turn a page. New challenges are great.

If you manage younger people, I recommend a book titled "Not Everyone Gets a Trophy - How to Manage Generation Y"  Young people are not wired like we are and it takes different techniques to motivate them.  And unlike Don, we can't just yell at them and make them do PT......

Plywood is now in 32th of an inch, so 5/8 is now 19/32 and 3/4 is 23/32. pick the one that's closer to what you have.  T&G for sure

use glue and screws to put it down to avoid squeaks.

Thanks Don,

Getting it to bite is not the problem (in my clay soil with no rocks).  If anything I have to remember to pull out every foot or so or it will screw all the way in to the heavy clay and shear a pin ( been there, done that).  My issues is getting it located exactly where I want the hole and then because the arc of the arm, it never creates a perfectly vertical hole, its a slight angle so the bottom of a 3 1/2 ft hole the bottom can be off vertical by 5-6 inches.

I like accuracy....this auger is the equivalent of a 4 moa rifle.  Good enough but not going to punch the same hole in the same location twice.....

yesterday i got a lesson in fence building....thank you Youtube, Mother Earth News and other sites.

Put the post auger on the tractor and marked the fence line (50ft from center of the road) and put up a sting.  Its difficult to get the hole exactly where you want it with an auger.  Its more like getting it in the same zip code....and the auger will only effectively reach down 3 ft, when I need a 4 ft deep hole.  enter the old fashioned post hole digger....and enter shoulder soreness this morning as a major slap in the face that I aint the boy I was in my teens that could rock a post hole digger for hours in the heat....So in go the posts and I used a 3/4 iron pipe with a cap on the end as my tamper for the backfill, adding a few inches at a time and tamping solidly.  Posts are rock solid thanks to heavy clay soil.

In any event I now have the posts in the ground at each end for the classic H frame configuration.  Next up will be to add the horizontal portion and start stringing wire.  I think I will buy a T post popper to go with the fence stretcher so I can reuse the posts in the section of fence I am taking down.

Pics to come next week.
