Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Silver is under $16 oz!!
« on: December 17, 2014, 04:15:36 AM »
Guys, just bought a little more Silver from Silver.com and it was like 5% over spot.

Cheaper than JM but they charge shipping, but still lower price.

Oil is falling as is the market all week and things look nasty in russia.

13302
There was a bit of rust on the original 3.54 ring gear from disuse, but that is no issue since it will polish right off as soon as I get those innards turning under power some day soon.

We can hardly wait,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Ok, going to get it Weds. morning. No back fees and it runs and stops. I will just clean it up some and drive as is until I flip the other. The biggest part will be the rear end and paint.

Not sure if the winch will be there or not, he may have sold it but as of today he said it is still there. Not a deal breaker for me but I know others are interested.

Nice thing is I have all the main parts for the swap, engine-tranny-tcase-axles. Just going to have to source a lift, brake booster and the lines for it. Only real custom parts will be the drive lines.

Thinking about a 6 inch lift using 4 in springs in the front and flipped rear shackles. All new springs of course as these are 20+ years old. Want to keep the springs flatter so mounts and shackles will need some fabing.

Powerplant, Driveline, and Braking / Re: GM 14 bolt build for the Sub.
« on: December 16, 2014, 03:35:06 PM »
Yes I will. Been doing research on the 60 front also and looks like changing the hubs to internal is the way to go. The external selectro hubs are said to be weaker and hard to find parts for.

For the rear, it looks to be just what I need cept for a locker and dics.

Now that it looks like I have a new Sub lined up. Well new to me after 23 years of who knows what.

This 14b and Dana 60 will be a solid addition to the running gear. Add some mid frame supports, motor mount for the Cummins and bumpers the frame should be much better off from stock.

Heck, doesn't bother me but the seller complained. Rain is when you can't see across the street. We've had an inch in a day, wow,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,not

I'm sure as hell not gonna melt!

My only issue with the rain is keeping the pool from running over.

Have some great stories of the rain, one reason I love tall trucks.

Yes its an auto with a 350. Was going look at it today but raining, so Weds is the day now.

Not really Early but Merry Christmas to all you lugs out there.

Saw this and it got me thinking of you guys,

From the shadow it looks like a Sea King?? Rice patties and camo vest with a sea king and gunner? Am I missing something or is that an early Green Giant before the 53 became the main bird?

Just got hooked up with the guy, should look at it today. He said most don't want to come out to where it is. Point Reyes which is above SF right on the coast, just 60 miles from me and a killer drive!

It has a 350, surface rust and a bad front fender which is coming off for the transplant anyway. He said the only issue is about 5 antenna holes up top (why do you guys do that)

Interior is bare, no rear AC (whaa)

Yep, Im happy with this one and it is not 3 hours away!! Hopefully I can look at it today.

Its all mechanical, floor shift, crank windows even looks like locking hubs. I'm guessing it has a 400 tranny maybe even a BB.

I can even drive it home!!

Decisions, decisions,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Found this local and looks like a keeper. 2500 1991 with barn doors. Ruff inside and gas but legal to swap the 6BT into.

With what I can flip the 1500 91 for and the motor and tranny from this I will be ahead!!

Very nice.

Did you guys notice when you enlarge the photo rolls?
??

The pics are horizontal above, but when I expand they roll 90 clockwise to vertical??????

13316
You could rig a disconnect easy. Hooking it back up would be manual. Just have the link hooked to a spring that would pull it up out of the way.

You could even use a solenoid like from a doorlock that could work both ways! If that will work with axle disconnect a sway bar should be no problem.

Build Threads / Re: 2012 Jeep Wrangler Lift kit install
« on: December 14, 2014, 02:01:13 PM »
Funny I have heard that alot about Pro Comp.

Sure looks so much better now. Have you played with tire pressure yet? Are other shocks an option at all? Kits tend to be over shocked from what I have seen.

I never run full air pressure. Heck I used to run about 28 lbs in my old Jimmy. It makes a huge difference in the ride.

I have tended to put my own kits together then buy my shocks to suit. Just got a Cognito front lift for my 2500hd, the rest will come as installed.

13318
After some more thought, the trouble with having a long coupler near the center will be the twisting when in use. It may work great when first setup, but after some miles it may twist itself together since most of the torsional forces will be in the center where your thinking about the disconnect.

I think a hub disconnect would be better or even just a good ol pull pin on a heim joint or similar. Fold it, have another place to pin it and your done. Less mass, simple and less stress near the end of the bar.

Very nice.

13321
So get her cleaned up and painted the angle with semi gloss paint. Used round head machine screws to match the current hardware with flanged nuts.

Tightened it all up and I think it looked good and felt solid. Plus I don't have to bend over just to pull it around.

Plus the Cutmaster fit nicely right on the bottom shelf with room to spare even with a piece of wood to keep it off the front lip and level.

There is now a nice 1 inch gap between the tank and the 211 which is mounted with a couple self tapping screws now.

Now to find some hangers for the hoses that are used all the time. Don't have room for all the adapters since both units are 120/240 and use diff adapters.

Thinks of something like tape hangers for the hoses vs hooks (don't want kinked hoses) then a small tray for the consumables in front.

13322
Then I placed the top on and drilled the matching holes with a Step Drill Bit (another must have guys) since it will let you be a little off and center the holes up and does a nice job of chamfering the holes too. And if you are a size off, just press a little harder and you have the next size hole!!!!!!

Got a nice 2 inch rake vs the 4 in rake of before and it was 4 inches higher in the back. Doesn't sound like a lot but it worked great!!

13323
Got my Miller 211 dual voltage mig and it works great! Had a small issue with a plug I covered in another thread, but was my fault  ::)

Anyway I got this but still had my cart from my Lincoln 175 mig. Thought sure it will fit and it did. However it sat low, the Mig rubbed on the bottle and there was NO room under it cept for little things. Heck I wanted my plasma down there. Why not carry it all together when you use it together,,,,,,,,,,,,

So I look at the cart and it is a simple 2 inch angle on the front and flange across the back. So why not just move the front 2 inch angle to the back and make new ones for the front?

Take a couple measurements and a piece of 2 inch angle x 36 should just do it. $5 at the local metal shop and $2 for more nuts/bolts.

So I take it apart, cut the angle to 18 inches on the band saw, mark a few holes with a silver sharpie (great for metal work guys) and drill a few 1/4 in holes.

Photo shop maybe, but I have seen it for real.

I got so tired of hearing "my babies daddy" like its not even an issue anymore. Then they get into a new lexus.

Looks like I might get the first one then just do a cab swap so I get the barn doors and a great interior.

I'm waiting for more pictures, it will have a corp 10 bolt front and a SF 14 bolt in back. Both will come out for a dana 60 and 14b FF and of course the 6bt

No engine or tranny and the tires/wheels in the picture are not on it.

I don't like;

Back fees due of around $200 (plus Ca tax and a 400 mile drive)

Red Interior

Tailgate

I do like;

California truck=no rust!!!

I prefer the GMC grill to the Chevy

3/4 ton=heavier frame,

Pre 96 diesel, no smog ever but still a legal swap here in KALI.

Will have PS brake booster already.

With all this it could be an good frame swap. I mean its a few plugs and what, 6 bolts for the body? I would want the front end off for the swap anyway. Sure wish I had a BIG GARAGE!!!

I would get my clean barn door body with nice interior, keep the GMC grill and it would be perfect!

I got a line going on the first one. Looks like a clean cali truck with a clear DIESEL title, 3/4 ton. Only bad is it has a tailgate and a red interior. He is already dropped it some but this maybe good for a body swap.

Thoughts??

13331
I like the idea of the center (east-west) disconnect. No ends hanging loose to catch or line up.

How about just a piece of square tube doing the same thing? Same concept as you have with the bolts.

Use a spring to push 1 side onto the other for normal driving. For a disconnect just us a cable and pull back the sleeve hooking it back onto,,,,,,well thats easy!

Yep figured it was a post 85 (bigger pinion bearing) from the ribs, but prior to 90 from the mounts. After 90 (new body style) the mounts are closer the backing plate and ther is another bottom out plate welded inboard of that. (cut that off the 9.5 I have)

13334
You cover the whole roof with that stuff annually?

No, there is a protectant that helps with the UV that you put every year. About $25 a gal and lasts a few years.

The coating is when the roof gets old or you have other issues. It runs $60 and up a gallon and takes a day of prep and sometimes a few days to cure.

Hey, what are DOTs doing in here.

Anyway alone with the 14b I also have a Dana 60 from the 6BT truck that will probably find its way into this.

Starting on the 14b soon, the thread is here; http://real-man-truckworks-and-survival.com/index.php?topic=593.0

13336
Its a 2005 trailer. I've had it for about 4 years now. The right side was faded when I got it which is the same side as the leak. I can't complain about the life of the roof, I have heard 8-10 years and mine is parked outside and we have seen cooking sun for months the last few years.

I think 2 -3 years is when I would really start paying attention but us the UV protector every year.

13337
What coating is that?

I didn't get a chance to finish my repair and it is taped over and tarped waitng for the rain to stop.

Shawn, just the man I wanted to show up here. New there was someone here with what I needed.

Not that RuffStuff doesn't have good stuff and Don promotes them, but with lets support this place!

OK, do I need other hubs or is that up to me for width and can I get rotor that slide on?

13339
Yep, got us DOTs again.

I need to run up to Ruffstuff, they are just 45 minutes away. Just have to remember lots of $$$ as they have a lot for the 14b.

My dmax has the same but I really haven't done to much research on the conversion yet. Lots of them out there though. Sure its just a matter of the right hubs and rotors, thats why I am asking. Plus you loose more than 50 lb in the conversion.

13341
Ok, so hopefully you've seen my build started here; http://real-man-truckworks-and-survival.com/index.php?topic=81.0

Well the stock 8.5 will never cut it for what I have planned much less the small-block blew her up so she is getting a 14 bolt full floater. Picked one up from CL for just $120 that has the 4.10's matching the Dana 60 I have for the front.

For the 14 bolt I want to go with a locker and disc brakes. Has anyone done he disc swap here? I build my own for an 14 bolt sf sometime back and they worked great.

Looks like I have the wide SRW (single rear wheel ) hubs and the width is 67 in. For discs I really want to have slide on rotors vs held on with studs from the rear. Not sure if someone here can help me with that but some of the kits look to work that way, some do not.

I also like this skid plate for the yoke up front as the 14b tends to be on the LARGE side. It just bolts onto the pinion carrier.

13342
Or, leave the 52's so you have or upgrade them all. Keeping the same length keeps spare parts handy and leave springs do break!

And as for the Military, aren't you supposed to Kill people and break things? I have no problem with that, few real people do.

I think Don got it and put the motor in his garage.

The rear is 4.10 but think it is an open diff. Now to find truck hubs for less than I paid for the whole rear.

Have been doing the research and will do cross-over streering at least, maybe a booster too.

Unloading the 14b now, think it is a van rear 67 incher so will probably need truck hubs.

If a nice burb does not come up I have a frame with vin available from a 85 diesel. Would be able to do the frame work easy but have done it body on before too. Not sure if the frame thickness of .015 is worth the trouble of a swap.

Got a couple things working for the Burb now. Getting the Reg "fixed". (found a 3/4 ton diesel getting parted out with a clear title) but nothing settled yet.

Even though it is a 1/2 ton it is very clean and would be ashame to let it go. As for beefing up the frame it is more or less clear from the rear springs to the front shackles. So boxing all that is deff and option.
