My Aunt in law had a windfall and bought us Disneyland tickets w/ airfare for Christmas, so tomorrow morning we fly out. Wish me luck, flying out of SeaTac on Christmas eve. The kids don't know anything so we're pretty excited.

Jon,

Pack your toolbag man. Safe travels.

That 1st stage coming back in for a landing was intense. It's like something out of a scifi movie, firing retro rockets and all that. Very cool moment.

I believe the water intrusion is my issue with the compressor. Is there any repairing these compressors once something like that has occurred?

Some of you may remember my wife drove a 2004 Yukon for some time, then while I was away for work traded it in on my Lb7 and her 05 Passat. All I can say is God works some little miracles sometimes.

The Passat was not vetted by me, and our friend tried talking her out of it but she was insistant. Suspension issues right out of the gate, upper control arm stripped a bolt and had to be replaced. Coolant system issues with multiple inline sensors not communicating with each other along with the thermostat caused it to run rich. Exhaust fumes entered the cabin unless the hvac was on recirculated air. A/C had to be repaired and re-charged, (lower line to the condenser broke off somehow), and the tri-pipe connection behind the throttle body started to leak as the car cooled. After the first oil change, I used factory spec Euro oil to try to protect the turbo and the engine began to leak like a sieve with multiple locations. I replaced the valve cover gasket and slowed down the major flow, but when the turbo bearings started making noise I decided that this "low miles" German junk had to go, so we called my buddy back. Guess what, he hadn't sold the Denali, his partner had been driving it around for 10 months as his personal car.

We dropped off the jalopy and picked up the Denali for SAME amount we had into it initially when we traded it in, and she couldn't be happier. Last Saturday however the DIC let us know GM wasn't done with us either and "battery not charging" light came on. i checked resistance at the harness to the alternator, output from the Alt to the battery, the battery on its own and brought the alt to o'reilly's for a final bench test to confirm it was indeed toast. Not bad for an original Delphi w/ 11 years and 150k on it. Installation was cake. Tensioner to release the belt, two bolts at the bottom of the alt, the plug and power lead and done. 15 min on the install tops.

Now to trouble shoot what will be now the 3rd air ride compressor I've had to install in this truck... anyone have any ideas why these things would keep going out on me? The original just quit working on it about 2 years ago. the replacement fired right up after installation and worked great for about 11 months and failed the same way. Warranty granted by my buddy at the local chevy dealership, but this one only lasted about 9 months before it started acting up again and now is flat dead. I have to get a new fuse and battery for my multimeter, and will check resistance at the relay first. all fuses are good at first blush, and I've never been able to find any leaks in the original shocks. Any ideas??

Every time i make stock, it gelatinizes in the fridge. I'm not going for near the time that you are so i don't think it's too much collagen extraction, but could it be I'm over-reducing the stock or just have really young birds w/ extra collagen? the fun part is the blind taste test to the kids; "who wants a bite of jello?" expecting homemade peach and getting cold chicken soup can be pretty funny.

9.25 GM ifs applications excluding H2 hummer:

'88-'10 will interchange. Bushings differ internally 88-02, and 03-10 but that's it. all straight swap.

IF you have to remove the driver's side stub, pull the vent tube/breather assembly and get a looong punch. through that access hole, you should be able to punch the center of the stub shaft from the inside while a buddy slide hammers from the outside, greatly increasing your success rate while reducing the chance of breaking the case half or your toes after kicking the dog in frustration.

I tried like the dickens to make a sourdough starter with gluten free flour; (don't ask me why). It took weeks, natural yeast in the air, stirring, adding, removing repeat, and when it would finally start to bubble, and I could move on to the aging step, it would mold over. I love fresh baked bread, and am looking forward to some good recipes here. any real flour sourdough starter/mother recipes here?

don, where did you get a picture of big dave's truck hauling his buddies boat...............;D

Same same up in Everett years ago near the Navy base. My gradeschool buddy lived in a really classy apartment above the strip club when i was about 8 yrs old. He had holes in the floor in his room. Weird right?

That's some funny stuff right there Nate. Nice to see Dave made it out ok without too much damage to the boat.

sorry.. should have been more specific. 23 spline input shaft to the t case. they are male to male, and the trans has a 23 spline output with a female to female spline coupler between the two male shafts

Completely unrelated to the present discussion. But I had a dream last night that TRN posted a request for the best polishing compound to buff his drive-shaft. Musta been that old Hamms I drank.
Me and you need to get together. Hamms was post wheeling beverage of choice, Olympia post hunting, Rainier during fishing. (less projectiles and vehicles involved.) Not sure how it started, but we never mixed things up. Don't know too many others out there that will even choose to drink Hamms. How do you feel about Yuengling?

Ken,

you HAVE to regear those JK's or you get a slug on wheels. 07-10 were bailout models w/ tweaked motors and trans all meant to satisfy EPA requirements and give them a milimile per gallon gain. even the stock ones had trouble in a head wind.

JR,

I'm a huge jeep fan, but the unibody issues, headgasket issues, ride quality and poor transmission/poor MPG of the 4.0 drive me away from the xj's. zj and wj grand cherokees have even worse trans issues with their viscous coupler systems; the 249 t case is the biggest turd out there. stock height 95 and older k5 is a great truck. and mid 90's+ 4runners are great too. just too easy to steal and big targets here due to their popularity and the black market for parts.

i'm leaning stock k5 for you and your needs.

Thanks. '72 and that was before the 37's. it looked better with the 33's i think. no other pics anymore i had to sell her back in '06. Tate's Spanish eggs benedict.

SOP until you get to the hollandaise sauce.

English muffin, split toasted and buttered
Canadian bacon fried on both sides like baloney on top of muffin halfs
poached egg on top

Spanish hollandaise:
2 large egg yolks
3/4 stick of butter
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp fresh black pepper
1-1/2 Tbsp fresh lime juice
2 Tbsp fine chopped cilantro
1 seeded and finely diced jalapeño
1/2 very ripe avocado diced

In a blender, combine egg yolks, salt, pepper, and lime juice. pulse a few times to combine
in a small sauce pan, slowly heat butter, constantly swirling the pan until the butter is completely melted and foaming
with the blender on low, slowly drizzle in the melted butter until it is completely incorporated
speed up the blender to medium and add the cilantro, jalapeño and avocado and blend until completely smooth
return to sauce pan, covered on very low heat until ready to serve. I lid up and tuck it in the oven on keep warm cycle to hold it for up to an hour. if it starts to get too thick, you can whisk in a little water
throw a little cilantro and Mexican cotija cheese on there and you're eating in style

Edit: this was the wife's plate, and she wanted a slice of cheese on there, so of course I obliged her.

I had them in florida at Disneyworld back in '07 for the first time and fell in love. I've got several cool variations including my version of shrimp & grits, but they all usually start with the base recipe, either with or without bacon. (always with bacon). I'll post up my prosciutto wrapped tiger prawns with red wine, balsamic butter sauce over grits in a bit here if I can find a pic.

Tate's Cheesey bacon Grits:

I use a 4/1 ratio on liquid to grits. cook times vary of course.

2 cups water
2 cups milk(I like whole for more better creamy)
1 cup stone ground grits or coarse cornmeal(it's really the same thing, white is southern, yellow is Italian polenta)
4 tablespoons of butter
1 tsp salt(I use kosher) you may want more, they need a lot of seasoning
1/2 tsp black pepper(I used fresh ground)
1/4 tsp garlic powder
6 oz. of GOOD cheese, grated. Gruyere, fontina, sharp cheddar(doesn't melt as well but tastes good)
1 Tbsp rough chopped flat leaf parsley
6 slices thick cut pepper bacon(have nate ship you some of his)

Fry you up some of that thick delicious bacon. make sure to cook a couple extra pieces for snacking.
Drain, crumble and set aside
bring water, milk, butter and salt to a low boil
slowly add grits/cornmeal to the pot while whisking continuously
reduce heat to low for a bare simmer
add garlic powder and black pepper
continue to whisk for at least 5 min, just slow, tedious whisking
simmer uncovered for 10 more min while whisking every couple minutes. it's work, it's hot, it's worth it.

by this time the grits will be much thicker, but still loose and creamy.
add cheese in 1/4's, folding in with a spatula until it's completely melted before adding the next handful, and keep the last 1/4 aside for topping.
fold in bacon and parsley, pull pot off the heat and allow it to cool for a few minutes. (this stuff is molten lava so be careful)
if it's the main event, just use a shallow bowl, dollop it on there and top with a little extra cheese. I try to keep a little extra bacon to top and some parsley but the bacon usually gets eaten. Serve it up hot on it's own or with a good pan fried bone in pork chop, mmm or some poached eggs for breakfast and of course extra bacon.

P.S., leftovers get spread out in a shallow 9x9 baking pan and cooled in the fridge. This will set up very dense and if you cut it up into squares like brownies and pan fry them in some of the leftover bacon fat and serve a couple squares over some hot marinara or spaghetti sauce with some parmesan you will love yourself for doing so.
