Forgot to mention, Developer drove by this afternoon while I was hanging last couple panels. He stops, puts it in reverse and comes back. Asks me if that’s steel and I replied yes it is. He tells me he likes it and I just smile and nod.

I managed to keep my smart mouth shut and not explain “it wasn’t up for debate but thanks!”

The best fight to win is the one you avoid.

Really like that look Shawn, is it R panel profile that looks like board and bat?

Charles, I don’t think it’s an R panel. It’s a newer product all the steel companies have with their own spin on colors. I searched awhile to find this exact color.

As far as the fight it’s not over by a long shot. The developer and a single homeowner decided to impose by laws on the other ten lot owners. Some real commie chit, lawyering up and gunna come out swinging. Luckily this is Montana and as of 2019 there is a law SB0300 that states they can’t impose more laws on homeowners than what was here when we purchased.

HOA's: Socialist, cowardly, control freak oriented, I dislike them, and in some cases absolutely necessary.

I mentioned I was a HOA president for 7+ years. Did not like the job. I had ankle biters (cowardly neighbors) constantly complaining to me about other minuscule things. I would consider their "problems" in the light of a raid I did against fortified Taliban positions and consider them too small to address. It is important to elect a president who is not a safety nazi or has never been in charge of anything or done anything of significance with his/her life or you're gunna be in for a ride.

Given a choice, I'd find a quiet dark evening away from everyone and apply a Texas Red Neck ass whoppin' to them and call it good.

I spoke with middle daughter today, forgot to mention she’s already taken her LSAT and has been applying to schools some of which have already contacted her. In her spare time (read little to none) she on her own time and ambition landed an intern a couple months ago with a Judge out of Bozeman not affiliated with Montana state. Her take on him is that he’s very unbiased and level headed.

Anyhow, I sent her all my information and she was going to use it to break it down like she does for the judge on actual cases. Review it and give me her opinion. Then when she gets back from Alabama next week was going to run all of this by her boss. I’m still hiring an attorney but second opinions never hurt. Will be nice to have a lawyer in the family soon.

A member here has a daughter who ran about the same course.

Shortly after LSAT time, she interned with a local Judge. That developed into her getting a job (after her undergrad degree) with a local law firm. She specialized there from paralegal to office management. She was promoted to THE office firm manager. Shortly after that, a firm in Chicago offered to pay for her master's Degree if she would be that firm's manager. She accepted. A couple of years passed by and she was offered the same position at a larger law firm. She moved and is knocking it out of the park over there at the moment.

Sanded decks on cabin last Saturday, then got first coat on area that was not under porch roof. Followed by 3 days of rain. Back at second coat here in pictures. One more tomorrow then do the area under the porch. Penofin Cedar 1 coat stain is stuff I’m using.

Planning on sanding and sealing cedar Adirondack chairs and tables next with same stuff.

Thanks guys

Started the week renting tow behind lift. That was about a day and a half of screwing around as it “has issues”. Above the garage door is how far I got before the lift quit twice on me about 20’ in the air.

So I completed the lower portion on East side minus the j channel I need to fish in above the two left windows yet. Those panels are just shy of 14’ long and 3’ wide. Left shoulder is pissed more than normal and I’m tired after another day high 90’s, better than the 100+ it’s been. At least last night it cooled to 70 again. Been staying in 80’s at night which isn’t fun.

Cool weather coming in tomorrow with a high of 70! Family starting to arrive for a long weekend tomorrow evening so it’s good timing. Cabin is going to be full and so is the fiver. Maybe my shoulder will get a needed break.

Sorry for not updating this sooner. Siding is done with exception of rear where I’ve yet to complete roof structure for the 5’er and rear covered entrance.

Just started on rear roof structure and setting joists this afternoon. Slow going, I ganked my knee a couple weeks ago getting out of a tow behind man lift bucket that was about 3’ in the air on unlevel ground and well I’m no spring chicken.

Then trying to get the siding finished I worked on it for another three hours and really pissed it off. I don’t heal that fast and I’ve since injured it again apparently because I don’t learn easy either.

This….I feel your pain Shawn…something about getting less spring chicken-like.

I killed my shoulders again…left one not so bad, but right is keeping me up some nights.

Thanks & I concur Sam, yeah my left shoulder is pissed too just not as bad as my right knee atm. Add to it I’m shooting bow every morning and am left handed. 3D shoot at local church this Saturday, $25 buy in and $1k pot. Probably won’t win but gunna run the course regardless as more practice is a good thing, season open early Sept here.

Glad I don't have to worry much about snow load where I am. 1-2 ft is about max and it melts fast.

Nice work, winter is almost here, that will be nice.

Yep, us old guys don't heal like we used too. Will tell you though since I lost 30lbs, I can really feel the difference kicking in!

Set the ridge beam for the gable end on the rear of the shop. Was able to figure out the rafter profile on the east side. Need to work on the valley rafter tomorrow, that should be fun.

Pretty much, had I been thinking I’d have had the timber I fell and removed for shop cut into beams. Going to use that timber for carport builds in the future.

So long afternoon, my first try at a valley with two different sloped roofs. The lean to over the rv is 4/12 & the gable is just shy of 8/12

I am by no means a framing genius however I’ve done valleys before with same pitch roof. Essentially, the joists should meet opposed on the valley joist (probably incorrect term too). However, with one roof at double the pitch I will end up meeting the lower slopes roof joists only every other higher pitched rafter. I’ve read you can have them not meet but then you need to meet other specifications. Thicker valley beam etc. anyone with lots of framing background on here? I think every other will be ok and see no way for the high sloped rafters to push down with a load.

The third picture down from top was my first try at that wicked double compound angle. Ended up being a little short on bottom end. My plan was to stud and sheet wall up above the glue lam anyhow to keep birds and bats from having a place to roost. So that rafter will be supported across the whole length.

Oh & I set the gable ridge beam somehow an inch too high, it’s perfectly level though so now trimming the top down an inch. Lots of screw ups but it’s Montana and I’m using a little Kentucky windage……..

Guess you'll add more hangers as thing line up? Screws or nails, big fan of screws. Used to use SDS lags, but like the timberlock stuff better.

There is a simpson screw for the hangers too, way better than those fat little nails.

Yes, more Simpson brackets. Local yard gave me some other brand and you need to hang them before the rafters and I’m not a fan. The Simpson you can put up after you hang the rafter or joist. I personally like the senco palm nailer and standard framing nails. I do like the timberlok line which is what I used on glue lam and posts.

So hopefully this helps someone out in the future. Wasn’t able to find an exact answer to my question online. I reached out to Charles whom I know mentioned one time he had a book on framing. Without looking at it, him and I discussed the issue. We agreed that doubling up the valley beam would be a good idea. Then I recalled that a good friend from high school was a third generation custom home builder. So I asked him and here is what he stated.

If you have unsupported rafters meeting in a valley. You can double up the valley beam. You can also add blocking to support the rafters that do not meet another rafter IF it’s easy to do. I then asked can you just add blocking and not double the beam? He replied that you can. So every other steep rafter that is unsupported will get additional blocking behind it to the next rafter.

In case anyone is wondering what that looks like

I may go ahead and block behind every steep rafter on the valley side just for a “little extra”

State of roof structure as of 5:30 this evening. Few more rafters that all need custom cut on this one side to finish those. Rain coming in tomorrow, which is good after a full day of up and down ladders like a monkey.

I am just visualizing all the trick angle cuts required to fit these rafters. The blocking seems appropriate.

Have you screwed up some cuts/lengths? Me: I would have made many mistakes with respect to exact lengths. What you are doing is fairly complicated.

In all of that maybe 5-6 incorrect cuts? Which makes probably 3-4 boards that I cut then reused somewhere else in a shorter span. Once you get the angles figured out you just keep repeating them then it’s a matter of length and I pre measured everything. Make sure you lay out your vertical lines on any adjoining rafter with a bullet level. Makes measuring pretty simple. You start with longest boards first obviously. Not much wasted material this way.

Thanks, not my first rodeo. I did learn a couple things so it has been fun in that regard.

There was a large pile of dirt on the back side of other lot we purchased this spring. It ended up there when they bull dozed the road in. I spent yesterday loading it up with skid steer and dump trailer. It was an eye sore on that lot. Moved it to behind our cabin. Going to fill in a low area and plant to grass this month. I’ve brought in stone for a road that will service a future guest cabin and rear carport behind our cabin. This left an area between my machine shop, cabin and that new driveway where it’s low. So free fill dirt and fixing that low area. Just another project.

Low spots can drive you nuts. Great time to address it.

My little dip was totally washed out, needs it own drain besides the 12in up top.Ive been looking for a 6 inch drain pipe.

Bottom pic, just to the left of tree on right there is a 12” culvert that goes under the driveway

Cutting tails and installing facia board

Think I’ve shown similar “tools” for hanging long pieces by myself before but here’s another stab at it.

Old guy chit, the trailer made for a nice stable platform for the ladders. That up and down off the trailer and my right knee wasn’t happy about it so I improvised.

Funny how far we go now to make it just a little easier. Sometimes major, sometimes not.
