Decided I should probably finish the exterior on the machine shop. The attached two car garage will be getting the wainscoting treatment next spring. In addition I will be staining it to match the cabin for now. It should be pretty close in color to the steel board and batton that I’ve been using on the big shop. That steel will be used on the machine shop too. If I don’t like the look of garage after I stain it I may pull off all of that pine board and batton and steel it as well. We shall see, atm I’m not that enthusiastic about pulling all that pine off and creating a lot more work for myself.

Nice job on the medicine cabinet, price was right.

I’ve been considering a battery back up style unit for our cabin since we don’t power our well. It’s shared and on neighbors so the power we need here is minimal.

I dislike underground LP tanks, always have and always will. The developer who built the cabin didn’t want to bring in enough fill & buried the tank too low. So now the lid or box will fill with water during the winter and spring wet season.

This is my second attempt to try and keep water out of it. I buried a drain pipe as low as I could yet still get fall on it to the ditch. The drain opening at the box on the outside at this level it is below the regulator and shut off valve inside the box. I then filled it with pea gravel on the drain side outside of green box to the surface. Finally I cut the soil around the whole thing out about 8” deep and sloped the soil around perimeter of box to the drain side. Finally I backfilled around box with pea gravel. My thought is any water around exterior should make its way thru pea gravel and towards drain. Fingers crossed

Been looking for almost a year for a 350x, had one close to being bought a few months ago from a widow when she backed out at 11th hour. Got done stacking wood this evening and sat down in office. I opened marketplace and this was just listed about 20 mins from me. An hour later it was in my pickup. Needs a couple small things but seems like a solid bike.

Bought it for a song many years ago from someone who didn’t know Honda bikes.
“Hasn’t ran in at least ten years. “
I drained the fuel tank out in fresh gas and it fired right up.

Now that 2-stroker…well thems a whole nuther level of smack. lol.
Have fun with that!

Sam, this is a 4 stroke the big boy. Those 250Rtwo smokes are no joke but always needing something. These are a bit more reliable like the 200x’s imo

Slowly been knocking out small projects.

Got the first loads of lumber leveled and stacked with plenty of dry stickers so hopefully it dries straight.

Fixed a French drain on west side of cabin where I brought in fill dirt last year. Added a 4” tile in a sick then backfilled over it with crushed gravel.

Extended yard out to back drive and planted that. Sorry no pics of either.

Then I started framing in the roof section between the two sheds. I had bought two extra roof panels when I built the second wood shed the winter we bought this place. Plan was to always cover in between the two. Originally I thought it would be a great place for a wood splitter and hanging shovels and rakes. It is now going to become a “she shed” for the wife. She needs storage space for honey bee and chicken stuff. So I’ll enclose it and add some crushed gravel for a floor. Add an interior light and call it a day.

And I’ve been building axles quite regularly again on top of parts production. So very busy all around.

Maybe, I get the kids cars etc and your own. But…… maintaining a large swath of equipment is expensive and time consuming especially for the average Joe. With that said I wonder at what point you couldn’t just rent equipment, get job done and move forward? I know Ashley when Don bought farm had that mind set for Don versus buying large equipment. This advice coming from someone who owned a considerable amount of it at the time meaning Ashley. Of course Don did what he wanted as will you. However, part of all my project budgets is rental equipment, I’m one guy with X hours.

I “may” look at one of those for the next place. But probably not, LP is easy. Next home will have fireplace and large attached garage with wood stove. Then most likely radiant tube floor heat as well.

They can’t if it’s frozen, they have rented a steamer in emergencies on other setups I was told by lp company.

Currently our cabin’s hot water heater and stove are only two appliances running on this LP Tank. I’m going to install a boiler possibly this winter or next year to run radiant floor heat in cabin. I like wood but warm floors would be nice and it’s super efficient.

In addition I’m running a line this fall to the two car garage. My plan is to run a 2 sided boiler for the efficiency apartment upstairs that we need to finish. One side will run the radiant floor heat up there and one side will provide hot water. In addition, I’d like to add an lp wall heater (similar to the low Bay Area of my shop) that would heat garage in winter. Currently, I have a ceiling mounted 220v heater and it sucks a lot of juice.

So I really hope this fixes the LP tank and allows it to be filled in the winter. Future needs will require it. Btw, this is second attempt at fixing the problem. The quick fix didn’t work a year ago.

It is right at the top of the stairs that was always a hot spot anyway. Low speed is super quiet and said to pull just 27 watts. It cools down nice here at night and we always get indian summers (is that PC). I can feel the difference already.

Had to order a cover, no one has the size I want in stock. HD had it for less than anyone and next day delivery, free.

Control box is just hanging until I get the app working and the cord is a good 10ft. Still have to fill the ends where the insulation is open and make louvers to keep air going the right way.

That should help overall on electric bill I’d think. We looked at installing one in first house in Colorado.

I feel your pain, my right knee is about 95% currently. Every day seems slightly better. But then last week I decided to pick up a 14 bolt 10.5 off the skid loader forks and just walk it about 15 foot to a set of stands in behind another axle I was working on. No shafts, pinion, carrier or ring gear just the housing w/ hubs and no brakes. 200# ish I think? Pulled my lower back and I didn’t bend over or twist or anything stupid even. Gotta stop lifting chit I guess.

My little dip was totally washed out, needs it own drain besides the 12in up top.Ive been looking for a 6 inch drain pipe.

Thanks, not my first rodeo. I did learn a couple things so it has been fun in that regard.

There was a large pile of dirt on the back side of other lot we purchased this spring. It ended up there when they bull dozed the road in. I spent yesterday loading it up with skid steer and dump trailer. It was an eye sore on that lot. Moved it to behind our cabin. Going to fill in a low area and plant to grass this month. I’ve brought in stone for a road that will service a future guest cabin and rear carport behind our cabin. This left an area between my machine shop, cabin and that new driveway where it’s low. So free fill dirt and fixing that low area. Just another project.

So I’ve been a long time fan and customer of Discount Tire and their sister company Discounttiredirect.com (15 years?) It would appear that they have bought out or merged etc with tire rack. Pricing appears to have gone up. They will no longer ship to your home, only one of their discount tire stores.

Shopping for my youngest in Bozeman at college. Simpletire.com was $150-200 less on comparable set of tires. They will ship to mom and pop tire shops.

They just earned my business.

I’ll follow up once she gets them installed.

In all of that maybe 5-6 incorrect cuts? Which makes probably 3-4 boards that I cut then reused somewhere else in a shorter span. Once you get the angles figured out you just keep repeating them then it’s a matter of length and I pre measured everything. Make sure you lay out your vertical lines on any adjoining rafter with a bullet level. Makes measuring pretty simple. You start with longest boards first obviously. Not much wasted material this way.

So it was mid 80’s here today, has been 90 lately. Neighbor and I volunteered to help the developer clean out the trail to the creek on the back side of our development. Trail is around 400-500 yards and several hundred elevation drop I believe. Couple downed trees in creek where we’d like to fish, some very large trout spotted on said creek. We couldn’t get to this particular tree with excavator. That creek is a good 9-11 ft deep in this area. Tree doesn’t look like it but it’s about 6’ deep. So neighbor initially tried going out in waders. Couldn’t get it, got wet. So I volunteered to put on trunks and water shoes and swim out to try and get a chain around it. Unknown to me at the time is that creek which comes from a local lake is spring fed somewhere up stream between here and the lake. So I get in and it’s taking my breath away it’s so cold. I then swim out to the log with chain in tow and am doing pretty good with exception of stirring up a lot of silt so that I can’t see the log now. I get next to where I think it is and dive down. Lose the log location and then surface. At this point I can’t feel my feet and can’t catch my breath. Can’t even talk or yell, taking my breath away. Was gunna be in real trouble quick. Swim back to shore and get pulled out.

So we’ve decided I’m building a grapple from rebar in the morning and we’re going fishing with the excavator. To be continued……

In case anyone is wondering what that looks like

I may go ahead and block behind every steep rafter on the valley side just for a “little extra”

So hopefully this helps someone out in the future. Wasn’t able to find an exact answer to my question online. I reached out to Charles whom I know mentioned one time he had a book on framing. Without looking at it, him and I discussed the issue. We agreed that doubling up the valley beam would be a good idea. Then I recalled that a good friend from high school was a third generation custom home builder. So I asked him and here is what he stated.

If you have unsupported rafters meeting in a valley. You can double up the valley beam. You can also add blocking to support the rafters that do not meet another rafter IF it’s easy to do. I then asked can you just add blocking and not double the beam? He replied that you can. So every other steep rafter that is unsupported will get additional blocking behind it to the next rafter.

Guess you'll add more hangers as thing line up? Screws or nails, big fan of screws. Used to use SDS lags, but like the timberlock stuff better.

There is a simpson screw for the hangers too, way better than those fat little nails.

Yes, more Simpson brackets. Local yard gave me some other brand and you need to hang them before the rafters and I’m not a fan. The Simpson you can put up after you hang the rafter or joist. I personally like the senco palm nailer and standard framing nails. I do like the timberlok line which is what I used on glue lam and posts.

So long afternoon, my first try at a valley with two different sloped roofs. The lean to over the rv is 4/12 & the gable is just shy of 8/12

I am by no means a framing genius however I’ve done valleys before with same pitch roof. Essentially, the joists should meet opposed on the valley joist (probably incorrect term too). However, with one roof at double the pitch I will end up meeting the lower slopes roof joists only every other higher pitched rafter. I’ve read you can have them not meet but then you need to meet other specifications. Thicker valley beam etc. anyone with lots of framing background on here? I think every other will be ok and see no way for the high sloped rafters to push down with a load.

The third picture down from top was my first try at that wicked double compound angle. Ended up being a little short on bottom end. My plan was to stud and sheet wall up above the glue lam anyhow to keep birds and bats from having a place to roost. So that rafter will be supported across the whole length.

Oh & I set the gable ridge beam somehow an inch too high, it’s perfectly level though so now trimming the top down an inch. Lots of screw ups but it’s Montana and I’m using a little Kentucky windage……..

Pretty much, had I been thinking I’d have had the timber I fell and removed for shop cut into beams. Going to use that timber for carport builds in the future.
